Leffler motivated for final year

Goals? Brett Leffler has a few heading into his WHL farewell tour.

rLet's start with the four he potted on Saturday night, leading the Regina Pats to their first victory in six pre-season contests. The final marker, coming just 50 seconds into overtime, gave Regina a 6-5 win over the Saskatoon Blades in front of 1,722 fans at the Brandt Centre.

rLeffler is hoping it's a sign of things to come as he looks to build upon last season's 33-goal campaign and, in doing so, help carry the Pats back to the playoffs in his final season of junior eligibility. If he accomplishes both of those goals, the 20-year-old right winger should improve his odds of landing a coveted pro contract.

r"I'm unbelievably motivated," Leffler said after Saturday's game. "It's my last kick at it. I want to go out with some end results for next year. I wanna make sure that we as a team have a good year and me personally too."

rLeffler's 33-goal output was a rare bright spot in an otherwise miserable 2008-09 season for the Pats. Despite that breakthrough showing, the Washington Capitals elected to not sign Leffler this summer after picking him in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL entry draft. Leffler became a free agent and was invited to a summer camp by the Chicago Blackhawks but didn't get the call to attend main camp.

rAs a result, Leffler's focus has shifted to making the most out of the upcoming WHL season.
