GAME PREVIEW
Regina returns home riding the momentum of a thrilling 7-6 overtime victory over the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday. Maddox Schultz played hero, scoring the tying goal with just 18 seconds left in regulation before completing his first WHL hat-trick in overtime. The 15-year-old became the first player of that age in Pats history to record a hat-trick and now has 10 points (5G-5A) over his last eight games, with points in seven of those contests. Overall, Schultz has 16 points (7G-9A) in 20 games with Regina this season.
It was also a historic night for 20-year-old forward Caden Brown, who erupted for a career-high six points (3G-3A) — the second-most by any WHL player this season. The hat-trick was his third of the campaign, and Brown now leads the Pats with 49 points (25G-24A) in 46 games. Cohen Klassen (1G-1A) and Reese Hamilton (2A) also chipped in offensively as Regina went 2-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the 41-41 shot battle.
The Pats have been no strangers to extra time this season, going beyond regulation 11 times — sixth most in the WHL — posting a 4-6 record in overtime and 0-1 in shootouts. Their latest OT triumph keeps them firmly in the playoff hunt, sitting just one point back of Red Deer for the eighth and final playoff spot with a game in hand. Regina is also only four points behind Moose Jaw for seventh.
The Warriors enter Friday’s matchup seventh in the Eastern Conference at 19-26-5-2 (45 points), three points up on Red Deer and four ahead of Regina. Moose Jaw has dropped three straight games and is coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday.
Regina has had the upper hand in the season series, leading it 4-1 while outscoring the Warriors 20-13. The Pats claimed their last meeting 3-2 in overtime on February 1.
