GAME PREVIEW
The Regina Pats are looking to get back in the win column tonight after the Blue Brigade opened their Alberta road trip with a tight 2-1 overtime loss to the Red Deer Rebels. Marek Schlenker was Regina’s top performer, bouncing back with 44 saves on 46 shots, helping Regina gather at least a point. Caden Brown also reached a milestone, setting a new career-high with his 20th goal of the season.
Discipline proved to be a factor in the end as the Pats allowed a power play goal in overtime, and were 6-7 on their penalty kill. The Pats power play struck for an eighth straight game, and finished 1-8 on the man-advantage. The final shots were 46-30. With the loss, the Pats are now two points back of a playoff spot with a game in hand on Red Deer.
This marks the third of four meetings this season with the first two meetings being one-goal affairs. First, it was a 4-3 loss at the Brandt Centre followed by a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind overtime win at Rogers Place on October 25.
The Edmonton Oil Kings have been one of the WHL’s hottest teams since the break, posting a 9-1-0-1 record over their last 11 games dating back to December 27. The Oil Kings are coming off a high-event 5-4 win over the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, bouncing back after consecutive losses — a shootout defeat and a regulation loss — to the Medicine Hat Tigers earlier last week.
Lukas Sawchyn drove the offence against Tri-City, piling up four assists, while captain Gavin Hodnett led by example with a three-point night, scoring twice and adding an assist. Andrew O’Neill, Miroslav Holinka and Kanjyu Gojsic also found the back of the net, and goaltender Ethan Simcoe turned aside 17 shots to secure the victory.
The Oil Kings enter tonight right in the thick of the Eastern Conference race. Edmonton sits with 65 points, just one point back of the Prince Albert Raiders and two points behind the conference-leading Medicine Hat Tigers. With 65 points already on the board, Edmonton is just 13 points shy of surpassing last season’s total of 78 points, when they finished seventh in the conference — a testament to the strides made by this year’s group.
