Lead Up: Steel has Career Night in win over Red Deer.
Sam Steel scored twice and added three assists as the Pats beat the Red Deer Rebels 7-2 at the Brandt Centre on Sunday. The Pats scored three times shorthanded in the contest and outshot the Rebels 34-32. Chase Harrison, Dawson Leedahl and Jake Leschyshyn each had two point nights while Tyler Brown made 30 saves for his first win of the year. The victory was the Pats third in a row and the club has picked up seven of eight possible points to start the season.
Steel Named WHL/CHL POW
Sam Steel was named the Western Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week this week after a great opening weekend to his season. Steel was reassigned to the Pats by the Anaheim Ducks ahead of Friday’s home game against Red Deer. He scored twice in that game and was named the second star for his efforts. On Sunday he recorded five points and in his first two games, the Sherwood Park product, has seven points to lead the Pats in scoring. It is the first time Steel has been named player of the week in his WHL career.
Wagner Returns
Austin Wagner made his season debut on Sunday and scored his first goal of the year. It was the Pats seventh goal of the night and the third shorthanded marker. Wagner also had a fight in the contest and finished a plus one. Wagner was returned to the club on Saturday after spending training camp with the Los Angeles Kings. Wagner was a 4th round pick of the Kings in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Hilsendager Shorthanded
As the Pats scored three times down a man on Sunday, defenceman James Hilsendager picked up yet another shorthanded assist. The product of Lloydminster, SK, has 18 total points in 121 games of his career. Five of those are shorthanded assists. Last season Hilsendager recorded four helpers while on the penalty kill to lead all WHL defenceman.
Pats Make Trade with Red Deer
The Pats acquired a fourth round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft on Monday from the Red Deer Rebels. In exchange the club sent 17-year-old defenceman Jared Freadrich to the Rebels. Freadrich was originally a fourth round pick of the Pats back in 2013 and in 61 games, scored five goals and added 16 assists for 21 points. The Pats roster now sits at 25 players, 14 forwards, nine defencemen and two goaltenders.
