Giants WIn In A Shootout
The Vancouver Giants needed a shootout to earn their 28th victory of the season defeating the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-4 Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge. Brendan Gallagher led the way with a goal and 3 assists.
Vancouver got off to a quick start as Brendan Gallagher scored his 34th of the season just 2:52 in. Lethbridge would tie it less than 10 minutes later, but Spencer Bennett would tip home a Brendan Rowinski shot on the power play for his 27th of the year to give the Giants a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes of play.
It only took 19 seconds into the second period for Vancouver to extend their lead, thanks to Neil Manning, who scored his 11th of the season on the power play. The Hurricanes would counter with their own marker on the man advantage to cut the lead to one, however, three minutes later Rowinski potted his 14th of the year to restore the Giants two goal lead. It didn’t last long, Lethbridge scored before the period was out to cut the lead to 4-3 after 40 minutes.
In the third the Hurricanes would get the lone goal of the period, tying the game at 4-4 and sending it into overtime. Both teams had a power play opportunity in the extra frame, but neither could convert. Mark Segal stopped Mitch Maxwell on a breakaway to extend the game to a shootout and give his team a chance for the two points.
Brendan Gallagher was the Giants first shooter and despite being 0-for-4 on the year in the shootout, he made no mistake. Mark Segal stopped Lethbridge’s first two shooters and then Andrej Stastny went top shelf to give Vancouver a 5-4 victory and its 28th win of the season. Mark Segal made 29 saves for his 21st win of the season.
The Giants have a day off before returning to action Friday night at the Saddledome vs. the Calgary Hitmen. Game time is 6:00pm PST. The pregame show begins at 5:30pm PST on AM 650.
