Spitfires’ Costanzo sets new franchise goaltending wins record
Joey Costanzo turned aside 27 shots on Thursday night at the WFCU Centre, backstopping his Windsor Spitfires to a 6-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds. His first star performance resulted in his 87th career regular season win in a Spitfires uniform, establishing a new franchise record.
Costanzo’s overage season has seen him put forth one of the OHL’s best goaltending performances with a league-low 1.94 goals-against average to accompany a .918 save percentage, three shutouts and a record of 17-4-2-0 over 24 games. His 87th career Spitfires victory pushes him past a one-time franchise cornerstone in Michael DiPietro (2015-19) on the club’s all-time list.
The first goaltender chosen in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, the Toronto native started his OHL career with the Niagara IceDogs before being dealt to Windsor for a pair of draft picks on Sept. 27, 2022. He’s proven durable in his time with Windsor, playing in 154 career games as a Spitfire.
The Spits enter the holiday break atop the Western Conference with a record of 22-8-3-1. They’re back in action on Sunday, December 28th at Flint.
HISTORY IS MADE! Joey Costanzo wins his 87th game with the club, passing Michael DiPietro for the most goaltender wins in Windsor Spitfires history! What an incredible accomplishment, congratulations Joey!#WindsorSpitfires pic.twitter.com/MsZ7j636TH
