Former Sting Carson Campbell’s Two Point Night Helps Kitchener Beat Sarnia 5-2
By Carl Chimenti
Former Sting Defenseman Carson Campbell had a goal and an assist to help the Kitchener Rangers (20-10-3-0), as they snapped the Sarnia Sting (10-18-3-1) modest three game winning streak with a 5-2 victory before a big mid-week crowd of 3,168 Wednesday night, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena. Campbell, who was named the first star of the game, was one of three Kitchener players with a goal and an assist. Haeden Ellis, the game’s second star and Weston Cameron also contributed two points.
Easton Walos (3rd star) and Jack Van Volsen, became the second and third Sting players to reach double figures in goals, as they both scored number 10 tonight. Cameron Aucoin had a pair of helpers and Captain Alessandro Di lorio, along with rookie Brenner Lammens contributed one assist each. Di lorio ran his point streak to three games (3-5-8).
In goal Evan Maillet put in a strong effort for Sarnia as he turned away 20 of 24 shots. Both teams had 25 shots on net in the game. The Sting were better in the face-off dot 33-27. Neither team scored on the power-play with Kitchener 0/2 and Sarnia going 0/3.
Rangers goaltender Jason Schaubel was also sharp, as he came up with 23 saves on 25 shots. Sarnia returns to action with two games remaining before the OHL Christmas break this weekend, with road games this Friday against the Erie Otters and the Niagara IceDogs on Saturday night.
An interesting first period that featured both teams scoring once and a rare penalty shot. Sarnia scored first at 3:24, on an even strength goal. Di lorio received the primary assist as he made a nice feed to his left to Van Volsen and he went short side, on Schaubel. Cameron Aucoin was credited with the second assist.
The Rangers tied the game following a Sting turnover. Haeden Ellis took advantage and scored at 5:46 from Weston Cameron. Kitchener came close minutes later, but Maillet made his best save of the period as he robbed Luca Romano (New York Islanders).
