Sting Well Represented at 2022 Hockey Canada Summer Camps
When Hockey Canada’s summer development and selection camps for the U20 National Junior, U18 and U17 programs get underway in July, the Sting will be tied for the second most represented Ontario Hockey League (OHL) franchise, with 6 members of the organization making their way to Calgary.
At the U20 level, Goaltender Ben Gaudreau will be attending Canada’s National Junior Team summer development camp, set for July 23-27. The Sting netminder had an impressive 2021-22 season, posting a .891 save percentage and 2 shutouts through 44 regular season appearances in addition to recording a save percentage of .924 through the team’s 6 playoff games.
Gaudreau has shined on the international stage, capturing a gold medal with Team Canada in the 2021 U18 World Championship last spring. His performance through 5 starts earned him the award for best goaltender in the tournament after he recorded a tournament best goals against average of 2.20 and a tournament best save percentage of .919.
At the U18 level, Sting Head Coach Alan Letang will serve as an Assistant Coach, adding to his extensive experience coaching with Hockey Canada. In 2018, Letang was named Assistant Coach for Team Canada Black at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Quispamsis and Saint John, New Brunswick. The following year, Letang was an Assistant Coach with gold medal capturing Canadian National Junior team. Finally, last summer, Letang helped coach at the National Men’s U18 Team summer development camp in Alberta.
Sting Forward Angus MacDonell and Defenceman Alexis Daviault will also be attending the U18 selection camp as the two players will compete for the opportunity to dawn the Maple Leaf at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Red Deer, Alberta. Through his rookie campaign, MacDonell recorded 10 goals and 11 assists for a total of 21 points through 56 games played in addition to a goal and an assist in 6 playoff matchups. Daviault found similar success last season, recording 6 goals and 15 assists through 59 regular season games played.
At Canada’s National Under-17 Development Camp, the Sting will be represented by Goaltending Coach Franky Palazzese and 2021 5th overall selection Porter Martone. Prior to being selected and signing with the Sting, Martone spent the 2021-22 season with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAA team. Through the campaign, the Peterborough, Ontario native tallied an impressive 41 goals and 63 assists for 104 points through 53 Greater Toronto Hockey League games, placing him third in league scoring. Martone also excelled for the Jr. Canadiens at the 2022 OHL Cup as he recorded 7 goals and 8 assists through just 7 tournament games.
