Sting Fall In Overtime
Plymouth, MI It was another solid effort put forth by the Sting Saturday night in Plymouth. Unfortunately the result would be the same as it was Friday night vs. the SSM Greyhounds.
On this night however the Sting would gain a point after scoring late to send the game into overtime.
The Whalers would score the games opening goal when veteran forward Jonas Fiedler beat Sting goaltender Ryan Munce to the puck then flipping it over the sprawled out Munce making it 1-0 for the home side.
Ex-Whaler Jordan Grant would get the Sting in flight early in the second when he beat Justin Garay to tie the score at 1.
The game was a see saw affair in which the Sting would not have the lead but would never trail by more then one.
Fiedler continued the trend scoring his second of the game in the process beating Munce on a Whalers power play with a wrist shot low to the stick side.
The nicest goal of the game would come off the stick of Chad Painchaud. Painchaud one timed a pretty pass from Scott Restoule leaving Garay defenseless tying the game once again.
Following suit the Whalers would go up 3-2 late when Mike Letezia scored with just over 4 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Sting would press and turn on the heat around the Whalers crease. Coach Shawn Camp pulled Ryan Munce in favour of an extra attacker in the last minute of play.
The move would pay off. Micheal Haley would persevere in a goalmouth scramble flipping a loose puck past Garay with just 20 seconds left on the clock forcing overtime.
The overtime session would end 2:19 in when James Neal stole the puck off a Sting defender before snapping a shot high over Munce’s left shoulder for the game winner making it a 4-3 final in favour of the Whalers.
Munce was strong in goal for the Sting stopping 46 of 50 shots and was named the games 2nd star.
The Sting are back in action Sunday night when the Sudbury Wolves visit the SSEC for a 6:00 puck drop.
