STING BUSY ON CHL IMPORT DRAFT DAY
Sting Swing Deal with Battalian Then Make Two Selections in Import Draft
Sarnia, ON The Sarnia Sting have added four players to its current roster today. First completing a trade with the Brampton Battalion then making two selections in the CHL Import Draft.
The deal with the Battalion saw the Sting acquire overage defenseman Erik Schwanz, a native of North Lakeport, Michigan, and veteran forward Jamie Fraser, a Sarnia native and graduate of the Lambton Sting AAA program. In exchange for Schwanz and Fraser the Battalion got a package of draft picks from the Sting. The picks involved were a 7th round pick in 2005, a 5th round pick in 2006 and a 6th round pick in 2007.
The Sting then made a deal with the Kitchener Rangers to move up in the first round of the Import Draft. Sarnia sent a 6th round pick in 2005 to the Rangers for the 41st overall pick in the Import Draft. The move gave the Sting both the 41st and 47th selections.
With their first selection and 41st overall in the Draft the Sting selected Russian forward Philip Ogleznev. Ogleznev, gives the Sting plenty of size up front, standing six feet, three inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. Ogleznev, born in 1987 is 17 years old and eligible for the NHL Draft in 2005.
The Sting then went back to Russia for its second pick of the first round. At 47th overall, Andrei Plehanov was chosen. Plehanov, an ’86 birthdate, was a 3rd round pick (96th overall) of the Columbus Blue Jackets this past Saturday at the NHL Draft in Carolina. Plehanov is a defenseman who played for Nizhnekamsk over in Russia last season.
