Sting and Spirit Skate to Draw
Sarnia, ON – The Sarnia Sting gained one point on Friday night, playing well enough to deserve two. Once again a hot netminder foiled Sting forwards who for the sixth time in seven games outshot their opponent.
Once again the Sting were led by a pair of familiar faces as it was John Hecimovic providing the offence and goaltender Ryan Munce providing the wall in net as he once again held his opponent to under two goals against.
Hecimovic opened the scoring midway through the first when he took a Jamie Fraser pass skated down the right side and snapped a wrist shot high over the left shoulder of Spirit goalie Mike Brown.
The goal was a milestone for Hecimovic as it was his 100th in his OHL career. Hecimovic becomes the third Sting player in franchise history to eclipse the century mark for goals scored. Jon Sim (165) and Kris Newbury (110) are the others.
The Sting would head to the dressing room with a 1-0 first period lead.
The second period saw the Sting outwork and battle the Spirit down low as they cycled the puck for a good amount of the period creating numerous scoring chances only to be stymied by Brown.
The Spirit would catch a break to knot the score at one when Chris Ferguson jumped on a loose puck and beat Munce to get the Spirit on the board.
The score would remain 1-1 headed into the third and then throughout the third period and into an uneventful overtime that saw both clubs just muster one shot a piece.
The Sting get right back in action in less than 24 hours when the undefeated London Knights come to the SSEC for their first time this season. Tickets are available and can be purchased at the box office opening at 10am on Saturday.
