Greg Walters To Remain With Club As Assistant Coach
Sarnia, ON The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club announced today the hiring of Shawn Camp as the club’s new Head Coach.
Camp led the Guelph Storm to the OHL Championship this past season defeating the Mississauga Ice Dogs 4-0 in the OHL Final. In his two seasons as Storm Head Coach, Camp had a playoff record of 21-12, winning 5 out of 6 playoff series. Camp’s only playoff set back came at the hands of the 2003 Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers. Camp has coached in three Memorial Cups. Winning the 1997 Memorial Cup and QMJHL Championship as an Assistant to Montreal Canadiens bench boss Claude Julien with the Hull Olympiques. Camp’s other Memorial Cup appearances include this past Memorial Cup in Kelowna, and in 2002 in Guelph.
Camp who finished third in OHL Coach of the Year voting was recently named Assistant Coach of Canada’s Under 18 team that will compete in the World Championship this August.
Camp joined the Storm in August 2000 as an Assistant Coach spending two and a half seasons in this capacity before being named the club’s Head Coach in January 2003. Under Camp the Storm compiled an impressive 62-22-6-0 regular season record, a winning percentage of .738%, the highest in Storm history. Camp’s record in Guelph includes a 2003-04 regular season record of 49-14-5-0 ranking the team second in the OHL’s Midwest Division and second overall in the Ontario Hockey League. Guelph’s 24 road victories en route to the club’s second OHL Championship tied an OHL record.
Prior to joining the Storm, Camp was the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations of the Hawkesbury Hawks in the Central Junior Hockey League from 1998 2000. Under his guidance the Hawks won the CJHL Championship in 1999 and Camp was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the 1998-1999 season.
Camp spent the 1995-96 season as the Assistant Coach of the American Hockey League’s Cornwall Aces. Atlanta Thrashers Head Coach Bob Hartley was the Aces Head Coach at the time.
Shawn and his wife Kara have two kids, son Jaxon age 5,and daughter Keegan age 2.
