Sarnia Sting Support Colon Cancer Awareness

This March, the Sarnia Sting would like to remind you to talk to your family health care provider about colon screening. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Lambton County and was responsible for over 3000 deaths in Ontario in 2009. However, if detected early enough through regular screening, it is 90% curable.

If you are age 50 or over or have a first-degree relative (i.e. sibling, parent, child) who has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, you are eligible to participate in ColonCancerCheck – Ontario’s colon cancer screening program. To participate, simply talk to your family health care provider. If you do not have a family health care provider contact Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.

In addition to screening, living a healthy lifestyle can also help reduce your risk of many cancers including colorectal cancer. A healthy diet, limiting alcohol, regular exercise and not smoking can prevent more than 50% of all cancers.
