The Windsor Spitfires dropped a 6-2 loss to the London Knights Saturday night in their home opener. Looking to bounce back from a 3-2 overtime loss the night before, the team came out with force and a willingness to win.
After a scoreless opening frame, the game commenced in the second, where both teams found the scoresheet for a combined total of six goals. London opened the scoring at 5:07 of the second off a goal from rookie forward Eloan Le Gallic, with Kane Barch and Caleb Mitchell picking up the assists. Just over two minutes later, the Spitfires bounced back with Max Brocklehurst scoring his first of the season at 7:10, with the assists going to Bogdan Yakushevsky and Drake Gram.
The lead was regained by the Knights on the power play at 10:10 before adding two more goals at 11:20 and 14:01 to take a 4-1 lead. Late in the period, with the man advantage, Yakushevsky found the back of the net, cutting the Knights’ lead in half. The assists went to John McLaughlin and Ethan Garden.
London maintained its 4-2 lead heading into the third and would later add two goals, with Thomas Zocco scoring at 14:48 and Evan Van Gorp adding an empty-net goal minutes later. Michael Newlove saved 12 of the 15 shots he faced before Jake Windbiel entered the game, stopping seven of the nine shots he faced. London goaltender Brian Cooke stopped 28 of Windsor’s 30 shots to earn his second win in as many days.
The Spitfires return to action next Friday, September 25, at home against the Flint Firebirds.
