Game Day Preview: KGN vs PBO
The Kingston Frontenacs (41-21-4-1) look for a 42nd win this afternoon in the 2021-22 regular season finale versus the Peterborough Petes (28-33-5-1) with puck drop set for 3:05 pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. Kingston has an 8-3-0-0 record against the Maroon and White losing a 6-4 decision on Mar 31 in the last game in Peterborough after having won the first four as the visiting team.
Kingston won in a shootout on Saturday night in the final regular season game at Leon’s Centre with a Lucas Edmonds winner as the only shooter to beat the goaltenders. Rookie Maleek McGowan, called up from Cobourg Cougars, skated in his first OHL game for the Fronts. The NHL draft eligible Edmonds enters the last game of the season third overall for OHL points (112) and tied for the assist lead (78) tied with Captain Shane Wright, Martin Chromiak and Jordan Frasca with 21 points in the 11-game season series.
Edmonds (3), Wright (8), Frasca, (11) and Chromiak (12), make the Fronts the only team with four players in Top-12 on the OHL points list. The Last time Fronts had four 80-point players was 1997-98 (Chaulk, Mailloux, Allen, Bradley).
Chromiak’s 10 goals lead both teams, with the Fronts leading goal getter entering action with 44 goals sitting in fifth spot overall in the OHL. The LA Kings prospect has missed two games against the Petes this season.
Playoff Picture Painted
With the win, the third-place Fronts will battle the former bench boss Kurtis Foster and the sixth-place Oshawa Generals in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs beginning Friday, Apr 22 in the Limestone City at Leon’s Centre.
With a win today, Luca Caputi’s squad will tie the 42 wins by the 1989-90 squad, tying for the second most in franchise history. A single point will give the Fronts the second most points in the franchises’ history, passing the 1989-90 and 1994-95 (87) teams.
Petes Picture
The Eastern Conference eighth place Petes, set to face division leader Hamilton Bulldogs in the first round, have won three in a row entering the last game of the season. Emmett Sproule leads the Petes attack with 16 points (5G,11A) in the season versus the Frontenacs with Joe Carroll potting seven goals to lead the Maroon and White. Nearby Belleville, ON native Donovan McCoy has 16 points in 60 games as the former first round selection enjoys a successful rookie campaign.
