Maleek McGowan Guides Team Jamaica to 2024 Challenger Series Championship Win
Maleek McGowan is a Challenger Series Champion!
The Kingston Frontenacs defenseman represented Team Jamaica this summer in the 2024 Challenger Series. This exciting competition featured teams from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Lebanon facing off in a series of matchups.
Maleek and Team Jamaica triumphed in the inaugural Challenger Series by defeating Lebanon 12-8 at Toronto’s College Ice Arena. The match saw Team Jamaica initially leading but falling behind after Lebanon scored three unanswered goals. Jamaica regrouped in the second period, taking a 5-3 and then a 6-4 lead, only to see Lebanon equalize at 6-6. Jamaica surged ahead in the second period, scoring three more goals to lead 9-6. They maintained their momentum in the final period, ultimately winning 12-8.
Maleek rcompleted his second season with the Kingston Frontenacs during the 2023-24 season, and brought his talents to the international stage. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Maleek was initially drafted in the 10th round of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. Since then, he has showcased his prowess in 90 games for the Black and Gold, tallying 3 goals and contributing 17 assists for a total of 20 points. Renowned for his imposing presence on the ice, Maleek has garnered acclaim as one of the top players in the Ontario Hockey League and was named the “Best Body Checker.”
