Game Notes: vs Guelph – Nov 2, 2024
It’s a quick turnaround for the Kingston Frontenacs as they’re right back in action this afternoon against the visiting Guelph Storm. Coming off of a 4-3 victory last night over the Peterborough Petes, the black and gold look to keep their momentum going against a team they haven’t squared off with in almost an entire calendar year; with a big addition back in the fold.
Last week the Philadelphia Flyers sent the 13th overall selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, Jett Luchanko back to the Storm. The London, ON native suited up in four games for the Flyers, and was the youngest player in the NHL. After a surprising stint in the show, Luchanko returns to a Guelph team that has struggled to put the pieces together so far this season. The Storm sit at 3-8-1-1 coming into today’s contest despite having some talented players throughout the lineup. Although their record is the second worst in the league, you cannot afford to underestimate a team with this much talent.
From the Archives of Jim Gilchrist:
Legendary Frontenacs play-by-play announcer Jim Gilchrist sent these notes to the editor for today’s matchup:
- The Frontenacs have won only one of the last three against the Storm
- Kingston holds a 3-0 record in the last five seasons on home ice against Guelph
- Cedrick Guindon hit the 200 point mark last night against the Petes
Watch Out for Allen
Cam Allen isn’t just Guelph’s leading scorer among defensemen, he’s their leading scorer, period. The Washington Capitals 5th round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft came into the OHL as a highly touted prospect, but an injury kept him out for almost an entire season and derailed his progression. The mobile offensive defender is trying to get back on track now, and leads the way for Guelph with a goal and 8 assists through 13 games so far this season.
Allen can activate the offense from his own zone with exceptional breakout passes and his smooth skating. Kingston needs to be aware and ready when Allen is out on the ice, as the offense will probably run off of his stick.
The Emergence of Tuomas Uronen
On July 2nd, Frontenacs GM Kory Cooper announced he had struck a deal with the Ottawa 67’s to fill one of his import slots. Finnish born Tuomas Uronen was the newest member of the Kingston Frontenacs for only a 2025 4th round selection, and a conditional 2027 7th round selection. Through 14 games, the returns have been nothing short of spectacular.
The Vegas Golden Knights 2023 6th round pick has proven to be a force out on the ice with a stat line of 8 goals and 13 assists for 21 points on the season so far; good for 7th in the OHL scoring race. Uronen played in only 11 games last season with Ottawa before suffering a season ending injury, but clearly the Kerava, FIN native has put that in his rearview mirror. “Tume” saw some NHL preseason action with Vegas, even scoring a game winning goal against the San Jose Sharks before arriving in Kingston. It may have taken him a couple games to get used to new systems and acclimate to new teammates, but it’s safe to say that Uronen has definitely arrived.
