Game Notes: vs Sudbury – Oct 11/24
Tonight, your Kingston Frontenacs play host to the Sudbury Wolves and it’s 90’s Night at Slush Puppie Place! 90’s Night is presented by Move 98.3, and it’s a full 90’s takeover. 90’s themed music in-game, 90’s themed intermission games, and so much more!
The Fronts went 1-0-1 last weekend, with a huge 9-0 win over the North Bay Battalion before losing a heartbreaker in overtime to the Ottawa 67’s in a 5-4 loss. Picking up 3 out of 4 possible points on the weekend is a strong positive however, and they will be looking to keep adding points to their record in the standings this weekend. The Sudbury Wolves kick off a back-to-back for the Frontenacs, so let’s take a look at today’s Game Notes to get you set for action when the puck drops tonight at 7PM.
From the Archives of Jim Gilchrist
Legendary Frontenacs play-by-play announcer Jim Gilchrist sent these notes to the editor for tonight’s matchup:
- Frontenacs have won just 1 of their last 3 games against the Wolves on home ice with their last win at Slush Puppie Place coming in a 5-4 OT victory on Nov 25/22.
- Sudbury swept the season series last year with a 2-0 record
- Last Sunday’s OT game against the 67’s was the 400th OT game in franchise history
Walton Watch
Keep an eye out for Wolves forward Kieron Walton tonight. The Winnipeg Jets 6th rounder in the 2024 NHL Draft has had a strong start to his season as he leads the way for Sudbury in points. The 6’6” power forward is a strong skater and isn’t afraid from laying the body and driving the net.
Walton has 7 points in 5 games so far for the Wolves, which is big for them with the absence of Quentin Musty since he requested a trade. With all of that scoring needing to be replaced, Walton has definitely stepped up and has led the charge so far. If they want to beat the high octane offense of the Frontenacs, he’ll have to put some points up on the board tonight.
Offensive Production from the Backend
So far, so good for the Frontenacs when it comes to defencemen contributing to the offense. Captain Quinton Burns and Emil Pieniniemi both sit in the top five in defencemen points in the league, with 6 points each. After not getting a lot of production from defencemen last season, it’s turned into a strength so far this year.
Burns and Pieniniemi have been playing on a pairing together most of the time, but it’s on the powerplay where Pieniniemi is really effective. 5 of his 6 points have come on the man advantage, including his first career OHL goal last Friday night. The Frontenacs have been missing a d-man that can quarterback the powerplay for a couple years now and it’s evident they’ve found their man in the Finnish rearguard. Look for both Burns and Pieniniemi to get on the scoresheet once again tonight if they keep their strong play up.
