Winterhawks Weekly: PLAYOFF SZN
The Winterhawks wrapped up the regular season taking three of a possible six points last week – including a win in Seattle over their rival Thunderbirds on Saturday – and are set to kick off another playoff run in the Rose City!
The puck drops for game one against Everett in the VMC on Friday at 7 P.M., then 6 P.M. for game two on Saturday, before shifting north for games three and four.
Hot Hawks:
- Forward Josh Zakreski led all Winterhawks with four points (2G, 2A) in three games last week, scoring in both games against Seattle. The rookie winger was also named the team’s Scholastic Player of the Year on Friday.
- Forward Luke Schelter hits the playoffs on a three-game point streak after finding the scoresheet in each game last week. The second-year power forward posted eight goals and six helpers this season, including five points in March alone.
- Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme wrapped up his final WHL regular season games in style, with a goal and two helpers last week to extend his point streak to six games. The 20-year-old has posted points in all but two games in the month of March.
- Defenseman Marek Alscher scored on Friday and posted an assist on Saturday to push his career-best totals to eight goals, 16 assists and 24 points on the year. The Florida Panthers’ prospect also won the team’s Best Defensive Player Award on Friday.
Play of the Week:
Portland’s power play came up clutch in the final game of the regular season as the Winterhawks took down top-seeded Seattle in their barn on Saturday. This game-winning passing play winds up on the stick of Josh Zakreski at the back door, who tucks it home for the go-ahead strike. ⤵️
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 3 vs Vancouver 2 OT (Tuesday):
Another third-period comeback helped the Winterhawks snag a well-earned point, but Ty Halaburda’s two-goal night nudged the Vancouver Giants to a 3-2 win in overtime.
Portland 3 vs Seattle 7 (Friday):
The Winterhawks took an early lead, but a four-goal second period helped push the Thunderbirds to a 7-3 win on Friday.
Portland 3 at Seattle 1 (Saturday):
Josh Zakreski posted two points and Jan Špunar turned aside 29 of 30 shots as the Winterhawks knocked off the top-seeded Seattle Thunderbirds by a 3-1 final to wrap up the regular season. The victory helps Portland reach its sixth-straight 40-win season.
