Winterhawks announce 2023 Neely Cup Training Camp rosters
Portland, Ore. – The 2023-24 Portland Winterhawks season is set to kick off next week as the team hosts its annual Neely Cup Training Camp with on-ice sessions from Thursday, Aug. 31 to Sunday, Sept. 3.
In total, 77 players aged 15 to 20 years old will participate in this year’s training camp as we welcome members of the 2023 WHL Draft class to Portland for the first time, including newly signed prospects Griffin Darby (2023, Rd. 1) and Jordan Duguay (2023, Rd. 2).
The Winterhawks have named the 2023 Neely Cup teams after the four members who were inducted into the Winterhawks Hall of Fame last spring – Randy Heath, Cam Neely, Grant Sasser, and Ken Yaremchuk. The next wave of Hall of Fame players could be putting on the Winterhawks’ jersey during camp, just like the Hall of Fame inductees in the 80’s.
Yaremchuk (3rd, 424 pts.) and Heath (8th, 340 pts.) currently sit inside the top ten in Winterhawks’ all-time scoring and Sasser (274 pts.) ranks second in scoring among U.S.-born players. Neely, the first and only Winterhawk to have his jersey number retired by the club, boasted impressive numbers during his season and a half of junior hockey in the Pacific Northwest. Neely posted 146 points in 91 regular season games and scored a team-high five goals during the 1983 Memorial Cup.
All four players helped the Winterhawks win the 1983 Memorial Cup on home ice.
DID YOU KNOW?: This year’s training camp is also a flash from the past. Team Yaremchuk previously claimed the 2012 Neely Cup, upending Team Heath in the championship game.
