Winterhawks add Nick Avakyan to active roster
Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today recalled goaltender Nick Avakyan to the team’s active roster.
Avakyan, 20, joined the Winterhawks via trade on Dec. 3, 2023, after spending the first two full seasons of his career with the Tri-City Americans. The Glendale, Calif. native appeared in 17 games for Portland and posted career-best numbers in that span, including 12 wins, a 3.20 GAA and a .895 save percentage. Avakyan also earned his first WHL shutout on Dec. 31, 2023, as he blanked the Vancouver Giants in a 14-save performance.
After being reassigned to the Whitecourt Wolverines (AJHL) on Feb. 6, Avakyan made six regular-season appearances before taking the reins in the postseason. Boasting a league-best .923 save percentage and 2.46 GAA in the playoffs, Avakyan made 13 postseason appearances as he backstopped the Wolverines to an appearance in the AJHL Championship series.
The move brings Portland’s playoff roster to 25 players, with 14 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies.
