Hawks Fight Cancer
Tonight, we fight for more than just two points in the standings. Our annual Hawks Fight Cancer Night is an opportunity to celebrate the strength of those who have fought or are fighting cancer.
As you enter the game, make sure to grab a customizable “I Fight For” noisemaker to show support for friends and loved ones currently fighting. Then be in your seats early as members of the Siteman Group – which helped Winterhawks owner Kerry Preete during his own cancer battle – drop the puck on the evening’s festivities! We’ll have members of the Siteman Group and the Colon Cancer Coalition riding the fanboni and sounding the storm warning during intermissions as well, plus a fireman representing the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be climbing stairs on a Stairmaster in full firefighting gear throughout the game to raise money for his cause.
Still need tickets? Click here for a special fundraiser ticket offer – buy a lower-bowl ticket for $30 or an upper-bowl ticket for $17 and $5 will go back to our participating partners! PLUS – buy a special Hawks Fight Cancer t-shirt in the team store, and a portion of the sale will also go back to these partners! You can also show support by visiting their tables on the concourse and getting information on ways to encourage, support and FIGHT!
Join us as we support our partners and the battle against cancer!
The Mena Singer Foundation
The Mena Singer Foundation was created in loving memory of Mena Catapano Singer, a beloved staple in the youth hockey community who passed away after losing her battle with breast cancer in January of 2015. Through the camaraderie of Mena’s two sons and their extended hockey families, they got together for a pickup game after the loss of their mother. It was decided there that they would keep the momentum going and make the game an annual fundraising event. After that initial skate, there were five subsequent Presidents’ Day Cup fundraiser hockey games that raised a total of $15,811 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
VISION:
Children in hockey families affected by breast cancer stay enrolled in the game they love most.
MISSION:
The Mena Singer Foundation ensures that a child has the opportunity to play hockey despite whatever financial hardship their family may be facing due to a loved one’s battle with breast cancer.

Rivalry Renewed
After 13 games during the regular season and a grueling seven-game series in the second round of the 2022 WHL Playoffs, it’s clear there was no love lost between these two clubs during last season’s edition of their storied rivalry. Portland took home nine wins in the regular season, but the Thunderbirds completed a three-game comeback in the postseason to oust the Hawks en route to a WHL Championship appearance.
But that’s behind both clubs now. It’s a new year and there are plenty of new opportunities for bragging rights. And despite new faces littered throughout each team’s lineup, the fact remains: there’s nothing like a sporting event between Portland vs. Seattle, especially when it comes to hockey.
“Yeah, we’re really excited. We haven’t seen (Seattle) this year, so them coming to our barn for the first time kind of not only excites us but also excites our fans…looking forward to lots of fans in the building and reigniting that rivalry that some of the young guys maybe don’t know yet,” said Winterhawks forward Marcus Nguyen after Wednesday’s game.
Translation? Bring the noise, Portland!
100 for Chyzowski
It’s a milestone evening for alternate captain Kyle Chyzowski, who is set to skate in his 100th WHL game!
Originally selected in the third round, #58 overall, of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft, Chyzowski has steadily produced 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points through 99 games thus far, and his energy and leadership in the locker room earned him a brand new “A” stitched to his sweater for the 2022-23 campaign. The Surrey, B.C. native posted career-best numbers last season with 13 goals and 22 helpers in 68 games and chipped in five assists during 11 playoff appearances as well.
Congrats, Kyle!
