Experience Regina
On the ice, the Winterhawks are looking to open up the weekend with a win after a narrow midweek defeat against Moose Jaw. Like the Warriors, the Pats are in the midst of their U.S. Division road trip, but are finding much tougher sledding than their division leaders. Regina is 0-4-0-0 to start the trip in Spokane, Tri-City, Seattle and Wenatchee, and has just one win in its last eight games.
Pats captain Tanner Howe leads the team in scoring with 73 points in his first season of NHL Draft eligibility. Howe certainly seems to be Regina’s biggest threat with nearly a 30-point gap between himself and Braxton Whitehead (45pts), Tye Spencer (44pts) and former Seattle Thunderbird Sam Oremba (44pts) on the team’s scoring charts. It may be something of a transition year in the post-Connor Bedard era for Regina, but there remains plenty of young talent within the group, including 2022 fifth-overall WHL Prospects Draft pick Cole Temple.
Tonight marks Portland’s last game against Eastern Conference competition this season until a potential WHL Championship series. The Hawks have a 4-5-0-1 record in cross-conference play, including a 2-2-0-0 record at home against Central Division clubs thus far, and will surely be keen to get those marks back to/above .500 with a big win in front of another raucous VMC.
