KLIMCHUK DENNY’S WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Western Hockey League announced today that Regina Pats’ forward Morgan Klimchuk is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 23, 2014.
Klimchuk scored six goals and three assists for 9 points with a +4 rating in four games over the past week to lead the Pats to four straight victories in that span.
On Monday, February 17th, Klimchuk notched a goal and an assist as the Pats posted a 4-0 shutout win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings. On Wednesday, February 19th, he tallied three goals and was named the game’s 3rd Star in a 4-2 road victory over the Saskatoon Blades. On Friday, February 21st, Klimchuk recorded an assist on the game-winning goal as the Pats skated to a 3-2 win over the visiting Victoria Royals. Klimchuk finished the week with two goals and an assist to go with 1st Star honors in a 5-4 shootout victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Saturday, February 22nd.
Klimchuk, an 18-year-old from Calgary, AB, is in his third WHL season with the Regina Pats, and currently sits tied for third in team scoring with 61 points, including 25 goals, in 48 games. Selected by the Pats with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, the 5’11”, 185-lb left winger has accumulated 79 goals and 174 points in 192 career regular-season contests. Klimchuk was chosen in the first round, 28th overall, by his hometown Calgary Flames in the 2013 NHL Draft.
The WHL has also nominated Tristan Jarry of the Edmonton Oil Kings for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. The 18-year-old from Delta, B.C., posted a 3-0-0-0 record with a shutout in four appearances over the past week for the Oil Kings. On Monday, February 17th, Jarry stopped all 25 shots he faced for his franchise-record seventh shutout of the season while also earning 3rd Star honors in a 12-0 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes. On Wednesday, February 19th, he made 14 saves on 15 shots in a 4-1 road win over the Red Deer Rebels. On Friday, February 21st, Jarry stopped 25 of 26 shots and was named the game’s 2nd Star in a 4-1 triumph over the visiting Swift Current Broncos. On Saturday, February 22nd, Jarry stopped all 12 shots he faced in 30:47 of relief work in a 5-1 loss to the visiting Vancouver Giants. Jarry is in his third WHL season with the Oil Kings, and currently leads all WHL netminders with 38 wins and a 2.18 goals-against average. The Oil Kings’ third-round pick, 48th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Jarry has posted a 64-21-2-1 record with 13 shutouts in 95 career regular-season games. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 44th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
