Celebrating 100 Years: First Decade, 1917-1926
The Regina Pats Hockey Club is excited to celebrate its 100th Anniversary Season in 2017-18. Over each of the 10 months from August to May, the club will feature every decade of Pats hockey. To kick things off, decade number one, 1917 to 1926.
The 1917-18 season:
The Pats played in a league that consisted of the Regina Victorias, the Regina Monarchs as well as the Tyvan Tigers. The Pats went 5-1 with their only loss coming to the Victorias. As the Pats and Victorias were tied for first they played a sudden death game for the league championship. The Pats won the hard fought battle 4-3 and went on to play Lumsden in the South Playoffs winning the 2 game total goal series 28-4.
The Pats then played the juniors from Weyburn in the Saskatchewan final. The Pats won the first game 13-4 and bounced Weyburn 8-5 in the second game. The Pats were Provincial Champions.
The 1918-19 Season:
The Pats played in a league that consisted of the Victorias and Monarchs. Tyvan was replaced by the Lumsden Northerners that year. The Pats went 8-2 and the Pats and Victorias were again tied for first place. The clubs played a sudden death game for the championship with the Pats edging the Victorias 5-4 in another tight checking game.
In the South Saskatchewan Playoff the Pats faced the juniors of Wolseley. The Pats destroyed the Wolseley team 22-2 in game 1 as Duke Dutkowski scored 11 and assisted on 3 others for14 points. Game 2 was closer but the Pats triumphed 9-4 winning the 2 game series 31-6. The Pats faced Rouleau in the Provincial Final and the Pats walked over them 20-5 in the first game of the 2 game series. Rouleau defaulted the second game.
In the Western Canada Final – The Abbott Cup, the Pats went on to play the Winnipeg Lutherans and won both games of the 2 game series by a combined 8-5 score (5-4 and 3-1). The first game was played by Manitoba Rules: 7 players and two 30 minute halves. The second game was Saskatchewan rules 6 players and three 20 minute periods.
The Pats played the University of Toronto Schools in the first ever Memorial Cup. The first game was delayed for over an hour as the Fans were allowed to greet one of the Canadian Regiments as they were returning from WW1. They lost to UTS 14-3 in game one and three days later the dropped a 15-5 decision, losing the 2 game total goal series 29-8.
The 1919-20 Season:
The only teams competing in Regina were the Pats and Victorias. The Pats didn’t fare too well this season only winning 1 game in the 6 game season and missed the playoffs.
The 1920-21 Season
The Pats and Victorias were again the only 2 teams to compete. They played 5 games with the Vics winning 3 of the 5. The Pats didn’t make the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.
The 1921-22 Season
For the first time the Pats were involved in inter-city play joining a league along with the Campion College, Moose Jaw St. Andrew’s Monarchs and the Moose Jaw Crescents. The Pats went through league play undefeated going 5-0. In the Provincial Playoffs the Pats played game one at Rouleau. The Pats won the game 5-1 and Rouleau defaulted the 2nd game.
The Pats went on to play the Kamsack Kolts in the Provincial Final. Kamsack wasn’t to arrive until 9:20pm so the game wouldn’t start until about 10 o’clock. The late arrival or travel may have been a factor as the Pats whipped the Kolts 13-1. The second game was defaulted.
In the Western Canada Semi-Final the Pats played the Calgary Hustlers. Both games were played in Regina with the Pats winning the first game 5-2 but falling 4-2 in the second game. The Pats escaped with a 7-6 total goals series win.

The Memorial Cup was played in Winnipeg’s Shea Amphitheatre as the Pats played the Fort William War Veterans. The Fort William team won the first game 5-4, the Pats came close in the in the dying moments but were unable to get the tying marker. In Game 2 the Pats threw everything at the Fort William goaltender but were only able to salvage a 3-3 tie. Fort William won the Memorial Cup 8-7.
The 1922-23 Season
The Pats only competitor was the Regina Boat Club. The clubs were to play a six game schedule but after just 2 games the Boat Club decided not to continue. The Pats outscored them 25-3 in those two games.
The Pats went on to play the Weyburn C.S.E.T. in the South Saskatchewan Semi-Final. The Pats beat Weyburn 22-2. Syl Acaster led the way with 8 goals and 8 assists and Weyburn defaulted the second game. In the South Saskatchewan Final the Pats played the Broadview Juniors. Harvey Naismith scored 9 goals and assisted on one other in a 23-1 victory. Broadview defaulted game 2.
In the Provincial final the Pats played the Saskatoon Wesleys tying the first game 2-2 and losing the 2nd game 2-1. The Pats protested that Saskatoon was using ineligible players. The Pats protest was sustained when three Saskatoon players are proved ineligible and after the protest the Pats went to the Western Semi-Final against the Calgary Canadians. Calgary rushed to Regina and after a grueling 18 hour train ride and the Pats skated off with a 3-1 win. Calgary protested under Section #11 of the Abbott Cup rules “A junior player cannot play more than one senior or intermediate game.” The protest was thrown out. With their travels behind them and a days’ rest the Calgary club beat the Pats 6-2 in game two, winning the series 7-5.
The 1923-24 Season
The Pats played the Moose Jaw Canucks in a 6 game inter-city schedule with the Pats claiming bragging rights winning 4 of the 6 games. In the South Saskatchewan Playoffs the Pats met the juniors from Broadview. The Pats swamped them 15-0 and the second game was defaulted. In the Saskatchewan Final the Pats defeated the hometown Outlook Juniors 5-2 and Outlook decided to not travel to Regina for game 2.
The Western Canada Semi-Final had the Pats play the Winnipeg Tammany Tigers. The Pats won game one 2-0 and the second 7-2 to win the series 9-2. The Pats went on to play the Calgary Canadians in the Western Canada Final in Winnipeg. The Pats won the first game 4-2 and lost the second game 5-2. Game two needed overtime but the Pats couldn’t get it done and Calgary won the series 7-6.
The 1924-25 Season – The Teams first Memorial Cup
The only teams involved in league play were the Pats and the Regina Tigers. The Pats beat the Tigers in all five games they played by scores of: 19-1; 9-1; 9-1, 11-1, and 3-2.
In the Saskatchewan Semi-Final the Pats traveled to Swift Current and with a blistering attack came away with a 15-2 win and the Monarchs defaulted the second game. In the Saskatchewan Final the Pats played against the Saskatoon Wesleys winning 9-2 in the first game. In game two the Wesleys traveled to Regina and the Pats skated away with an 11-2 win in the game and 20-4 in the series.
In the Western Canada Quarter-Final the Pats hosted Manitoba University, Manitoba won game one 5-2. In game two the Pats and the Varsity played a 90 minute struggle. The Pats led at the end of regulation 6-3 and each team scored singles in the first 10 minutes of overtime. They then played two 10 minute scoreless periods of OT without another goal and game two ended 7-4. Overtime was needed again in game three as it was a 2-2 stalemate after regulation. The first overtime settled nothing but the second 10 minute OT was fruitful for the Pats as Cranstoun and Ingram each potted a goal giving the Pats a 4-2 win in the game and a 13-11 win in the series.
In the Western Canada Semi-Final the Pats played the Calgary Canadians at the Winnipeg Shea Amphitheatre. The Pats won game one 2-1 against the highly touted Calgary club and the Pats were able to keep up their effort and win the second game 4-3 and the series 6-4.
The Pats won the first tilt in the Western Canada Final against the Fort William Juniors 3-1 in a rough game. The Pats punched their ticket to the Memorial Cup two days later in one of the hardest fought and most exciting battles staged for some time. 20 penalties were handed out and 14 of them went to the Pats who persevered and won 4-3 and the series 7-4.
In the Memorial Cup the Canadian Hockey League decided to change the two game total goals to a best of 3. The Pats played the Toronto Aura Lee and needed overtime to capture the first game 2-1 with Frank Ingram potting the winner off of a defenders skate. The Pats outclassed Aura Lee in the second game winning 5-2 and the series 2 games to none, winning their first Memorial Cup.
The 1925-26 Season
The Pats were joined by the Regina Falcons and Qu’Appelle Light Horse in league play. The Pats went 4-2 on the season but the Falcons upset the Pats in a one game league final 2-1 with a goal that came with just over a minute left.
The 1926-27 Season
The Pats were joined by two other Regina teams: the Falcons and Argos as well as the Indian Head Bengals in league play. The Pats went 6-0 in the season besting the Falcons by 2 wins.
The Pats had a “bye” in the South Saskatchewan Final and went on to play Saskatoon Wesleys in the Provincial final. The hometown Saskatoon squad surprised the Pats scoring early and never looking back winning the first game 6-2. Game two was a total reversal as the Pats took a 5-1 lead to the end of regulation and they ended up playing two overtime periods before Metcalfe scored the deciding goal giving the Pats a 6-1 win and a 8-7 series victory.
The Pats played Alberta’s Blairmore Juniors in the Western Canada Quarter Final. The light, young Albertan squad were no match for the Pats as the veteran Regina team won game one 8-3 and the second game 6-2 for a 14-5 series win.
The Pats went on to Winnipeg to play the Elmwood Millionaires in the Western Canada Semi-Final. The Pats won both contests 3-2 in competitive games and the series 6-4.
In the Western Canada Final the Pats faced the Port Arthur West Ends. The Pats were able to eke out a 2-1 win in the first game. Port Arthur was not a flashy team but were effective and it showed in the second game as they downed the Pats 4-1 ending the Pats Dominion Championship aspirations with a 5-3 series win.
