Remembering Lyndon Byers: Former Regina Pats Great Passes Away
Regina, Sask. – The Regina Pats organization is mourning the loss of one of the toughest and most respected players in franchise history.
Pats alumnus Lyndon Byers passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the age of 61.
Byers, a native of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, played for the Pats from 1981 to 1984, quickly earning a reputation as a fearless competitor with a scoring touch and an unmatched work ethic. During his three seasons in Regina, he helped lead the Pats to two WHL championship series appearances, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in one of the most competitive eras in team history.
In 185 career games with the Pats, Byers recorded 202 points (82 goals, 120 assists) and 476 penalty minutes. He enjoyed his best season in 1983–84, posting 89 points (32G–57A) in just 58 games, which earned him a call-up to the NHL’s Boston Bruins, where he made an immediate impact with six points (2G–4A) in 10 games.
Byers also proudly represented Canada at the 1984 IIHF World Junior Championship, showcasing his blend of skill and physicality on the international stage.
Before his time with the Pats, Byers starred for the Notre Dame Hounds U18 AAA program in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, where he played alongside longtime friend and teammate Dale Derkatch.
Following his junior career, Byers went on to play 279 games in the NHL, primarily with the Boston Bruins from 1984 to 1992. Known as one of the league’s toughest enforcers, he accumulated 1,081 penalty minutes, while also contributing 73 points (28 goals, 45 assists) during his NHL tenure. He also spent time with the San Jose Sharks, finishing his professional career with a mix of physicality, leadership, and character that earned the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
Off the ice, Byers remained connected to the game and to fans, later working in sports media and becoming a beloved radio personality in the Boston area.
Lyndon Byers will be remembered not only as a tenacious and skilled player but as a loyal teammate, friend, and ambassador of the sport. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in both the WHL and NHL communities.
The Regina Pats extend their heartfelt condolences to the Byers family during this difficult time.
Statement from Regina Pats GM Dale Derkatch on the Passing of Lynden Byers:
“Our hearts are heavy as we extend our deepest condolences to the Byers family. I had the privilege of playing on a line with Lynden for five years — two at Notre Dame College in Wilcox and three unforgettable seasons with the Regina Pats. Lynden was more than just a great hockey player — he was an even better teammate and an incredible friend.
He was known for his toughness on the ice — a fierce competitor who never backed down — but off the ice, he had one of the kindest, most generous hearts you could ever encounter. Lynden went on to play over 200 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks, becoming a fan favorite in Boston not just for his grit and physical play, but for the passion he brought to the game every night.
To all of us who knew him, he was more than #34 — he was a brother. He’ll be deeply missed.”
