PREVIEW
The 2025 WHL Trade Deadline has come, and gone. Pats GM Alan Millar did his heavy lifting earlier in the week, but made a significant move on Thursday evening. He dealt 19-year-old centre Zackary Shantz to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for 2008-born prospect Shea Rollason and a second-round pick in 2027. Earlier in the week, Millar sent Anthony Wilson to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and Aleksey Chichkin to the Prince George Cougars.
There are two players coming in as Ashton Brown joins the team from the Wenatchee Wild via trade and Kristan Lacelle has been called up from the Saskatoon Blazers, and will play with the team for the remainder of the season.
On the ice, the Regina Pats battle the Moose Jaw Warriors in the sixth of eight meetings this season, with Regina 1-3-1 against Moose Jaw in the season series. The Pats last played the Warriors on New Year’s Day, suffering a 4-3 regulation loss.
The Pats finished their mini Alberta road trip with a 5-2 loss on Sunday to the Calgary Hitmen. Julien Maze and Matt Paranych scored for the Pats while AP goaltender Madden Mulawka made 26 saves in the loss. The shots were even 31-31. The Pats were 0-2 on their power play and 5-6 on their penalty kill. The Pats fall to 0-2 against the Hitmen this season. After Calgary opened the scoring, the Pats tied it at one. They trailed 3-1 after one and two periods of play.
Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Warriors are on a four game skid following a 5-1 loss to the Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. This comes after winning back-to-back games versus Regina from Dec. 31 – Jan. 1 (4-2 & 4-3). The Warriors only goal came from Aiden Ziprick. Matthew Hutchison made 48 saves in his Warriors debut. The final shots were 53-24 for the Hitmen. The Warriors went 1-3 on their power play and 2-2 on their penalty kill.
Warriors GM Jason Ripplinger was busy on trade deadline day, completing a three-way trade with the Swift Current Broncos and Red Deer Rebels. In that deal, the Warriors acquired 20-year-old defenceman Eric Johnston, a sixth-round pick in 2026, and a fourth-round pick in 2027. They also sent 20-year-old forward Brayden Schuurman to the Seattle Thunderbirds for the rights to 16-year-old forward Cooper Ernewein, a fourth-round pick in 2025, and a third-round pick in 2028.
WHO TO WATCH
For the Regina Pats, Matt Paranych scored his first goal with the Pats on Sunday, giving him four goals this season which is currently the most amongst defencemen on the team. Zach Pantelakis also grabbed an assist on Sunday, giving him seven points (4G-3A) in his last seven games.
With the Warriors moving Rilen Kovacevic to the Prince Albert Raiders, and Lynden Lacovic injured, Aiden Ziprick is the man to watch out for. He ranks second on the roster with 29 points (8G-21A) in 39 games this season.
COMING UP
The Regina Pats return home to battle the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, January 11 at 6pm. That will mark the first game of a three game homestand for the Pats as they will host Red Deer and Edmonton next week.
