Trevor Cheek Signs With The Colorado Avalanche
Edmonton, AB – The Oil Kings are proud to congratulate goaltender Laurent Brossoit on signing his NHL entry level contract with the Calgary Flames and 20-year-old Trevor Cheek on signing his NHL entry level contract with the Colorado Avalanche. Brossoit is a 6th round pick of the Flames who was originally selected by the Oil Kings 26th overall in the second round of the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. Cheek was acquired at this year’s WHL trade deadline from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. >> VIEW VIDEO REACTION
““It’s my first NHL contract so I was actually more excited than stressed.” said Brossoit “I just stayed focused on my game here and let the process play itself out. Obviously I am happy with the way it did.”
“It’s kind of been in the back of my mind all year,” said Cheek “It’s a bit of a relief to get it over with. It’s nice to know that I’ll have somewhere to play next year and obviously it’s an exciting time.”
Both these players join teammates Griffin Reinhart (NYI), Keegan Lowe (CAR), Henrik Samuelsson (PHX), Michael St. Croix (NYR), and Travis Ewanyk (EDM) who all inked NHL deals with their affiliated clubs earlier this season.
Brossoit had a breakout season in 2011-12. The native of Surrey, BC set new Oil Kings records with 42 wins, a 2.47 GAA and 61 games played. He also shined during the 2012 WHL Playoffs capturing the Eastern Conference and WHL Championship MVP honours with an amazing 16-4-0-0 record, a 0.933 save percentage and two shutouts. Brossoit competed in the seventh-annual Program of Excellence goaltending camp in Calgary this past summer. He was one of three goaltender selections for the 2012 Canada-Russia Challenge in August. Recently he was named the CHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 3-0-0-0 record with one shutout along with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .971 for the playoff week ending March 31st.
Cheek is a 6’2″ 198-pound forward who was not drafted by an NHL club. The Vancouver, Washington native was leading the Vancouver Giants with 18 goals and was second in team scoring with 33 points before being acquired by the Oil Kings. In 31 games with the Oil Kings, Cheek posted 14 goals and 13 assists to go with a plus-24 rating. Cheek’s 60 point season was a new career high. Cheek has posted 3 goals and 4 assists in 5 games to rank 17th in league scoring in the 2013 WHL Playoffs. The gritty two-way forward has now totaled 195 games, 65 goals, 69 assists and 169 penalty minutes over his three WHL seasons with Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton.
