FROM THE FARM Presented by Alberta Chicken: Luke Powell
April 30, 2024 (Edmonton, AB) – Since being drafted to the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft, local talent Luke Powell has been making his mark and growing his game on and off the ice.
Before the draft, the Edmonton native, showcased an impressive season with the SSAC Lions U15 AAA team, recording 58 points (33G, 23A) in just 35 games. Additionally, he participated in two games with the U16 team, scoring two goals.
“Luke had a strong season leading up to the draft,” said Michael Chan, Director of Scouting, Edmonton Oil Kings. “Our staff saw a player with natural offensive touch and a nose for the net, with room to grow his game, along with runway for physical growth as he was only listed at 5’5 130lbs at the time.”
The now 17-year-old continued to develop his skills throughout the next two season in the CSSHL with the Northern Alberta Xtreme. In his U17 year he tallied 41 points (32G, 19A) in just 32 games, and added six points in the post season (3G, 3A), playing a crucial role in his team’s triumph, securing the U17 CSSHL Championship. He delivered another impressive performance in his U18 year with 25 points (16 goals, 9 assists) in only 24 games.
“Each step along the way, from U15 to U17 to U18, has been about the balance of sharpening his offensive tools while building in detail and consistency to his all-around game, allowing him to adapt to the next level. He has responded well to being challenged by our development staff and his own coaching staff.”
The Oil Kings fourth round pick from the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft made his WHL debut at Rogers Place on November 3 against the Moose Jaw Warriors. He played five WHL games this year, tallying his first goal on February 21, 2024, contributing to the team’s victory over the Calgary Hitmen.
“Luke’s games with us allowed him to get his feet wet so to speak. He is an intelligent kid on and off the ice, so he was able to take some of the subtle details of the environment and apply them to his game, and was rewarded with a goal for his efforts. The intensity, battle level and overall strength of the players were things he was able to experience and take with him.”
Powell returned to his U18 team, equipped with valuable WHL experience in his back pocket to help him compete for a championship. Although the team fell short in a hard-fought championship game, Powell demonstrated his true potential in the do-or-die format in Penticton, showcasing what he was capable of with that mix of intensity and offensive prowess.
This summer, Luke will look to grow his game and enhance his skills to secure a permanent spot in the lineup.
“The expectations for Luke are clear – to come to camp in great shape, condition and ready to compete for his spot in the lineup. Coming to camp intense and engaged with the confidence of focused preparation behind him will allow his natural abilities and instincts to come out.”
