Another road win makes it five straight victories for the Oil Kings
The Edmonton Oil Kings have proven they can win at home, but they knew to be successful they’d have to win on the road.
They’re starting to show they can do both.
Brett Kemp had a two-goal night and was the game’s First Star, while Logan Dowhaniuk polished his trophy cabinet with his first WHL goal as the Oil Kings (10-7-0-1) skated to a 5-1 win over the Regina Pats (4-12-0-0) in front of 4,676 fans at the Brandt Centre on Friday night.
Dylan Myskiw (7-5-0-0) was sharp in goal, backstopping the team to their fifth straight victory – and his fourth straight between the pipes – with a 24 save outing.
Max Paddock (3-10-0-0) took the loss in goal for the Pats, surrendering five goals on 22 Oil Kings shots.
The hot streak continued for Edmonton captain Trey Fix-Wolansky who rides a six-game point streak – all multi-point games – with a three-assist performance tonight, giving him 17 points during that six-game span (5G, 12A) and 35 points (11G, 24A) in 18 games this season.
Excitement built for the Oil Kings and their fans even before puck drop, as the first overall selection from the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, Dylan Guenther, made his regular season debut with the Club.
After a scoreless first period Dowhaniuk opened the scoring for the Oil Kings with his first career WHL goal, from Quinn Benjafield, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 4:28 of the second period.
Ten minutes later – three seconds after the Oil Kings killed off a 5-on-3 disadvantage – Kemp capitalized, gaining the offensive zone and threading the needle over the shoulder of Paddock while straddling the goal line to make it 2-0 Edmonton. Matthew Robertson earned the lone assist on the goal at 14:59.
Shots on goal were 7-4, Edmonton after the first period of play and 17-14, Regina through 40 minutes of play.
Kemp’s second of the night and 10th of the season came just 19 seconds into the third period while the Pats were whistled down for holding the stick. After a scramble in front of the net, it was Kemp who buried the loose puck to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead from Fix-Wolansky and Benjafield.
Just 1:39 later the Oil Kings struck again as David Kope buried his third of the season to extend the lead to 4-0, from Fix-Wolansky and Wyatt McLeod at 1:48.
Conner McDonald’s fifth goal of the season made it 5-0 and gave the Oil Kings their second power play marker of the game, as he one-timed a pass from Fix-Wolansky at 7:27 with Kemp earning the second assist.
With just over seven minutes to play in regulation the Pats managed to spoil Myskiw’s shutout bid, as Jake Leschyshyn buried the rebound off a Nick Henry shot to make it a 5-1 game to round out the game’s scoring.
Final shots on goal were 25-22 Regina, which included a 9-8 differential for the hosts in the third period.
Regina finished the night going 0-for-5 on the power play, while Edmonton was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
Matthew Robertson (EDM) (3), Dylan Myskiw (EDM) (2), and Brett Kemp (EDM) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.
Wyatt McLeod, Conner McDonald and Matthew Robertson each wore an “A” and skated as alternates to captain Trey Fix-Wolansky.
The Oil Kings continue their span of six straight games on the road tomorrow night when they take on the Swift Current Broncos at 7:00 PM MT. They return to Rogers Place on November 17 when they host the Kelowna Rockets at Rogers Place at 7:00 PM MT.
