The Hurricanes used their two first round selections to select Defenseman Alex Theriau (TERRY–Oh) 6th overall and Forward Mark Reners (RAY-ners) 18th overall.

Hurricanes Assistant General Manager and Head of Player Personnel Brad McEwen said that finding another strong skilled D-man is exactly the type of need the Hurricanes were looking to address.

“Alex Therieu is what we were looking for with our sixth pick. He’s a very well rounded and complete player with a big body. Just a really nice overall package to his game, we targeted that so we were very happy to get him with our first pick.”

McEwen added that the being able to snag a sniper like Reners was an excellent opportunity with the 18th pick.

“With Mark [Reners] I don’t think anyone can deny what he does, he has 91 goals in two seasons and he obviously has very skilled hands and is just a natural goal scorer. We were very happy to take him with our second pick of the first round at that 18th spot.”

Defenseman Derek Ryckman was drafted in the sixth round 119th overall. A Red Deer local, the 6’3” 180 pound Ryckman is a big, strong mobile defensemen who totaled 11 points (3G, 8A) with the Red Deer Bantam Rebels of the AMBHL.

Lethbridge then made two picks in the 11th round, selecting 6’3” Kelowna Jr. Rockets defenseman Austin Baecker [BAKE-er] of Kelowna, BC (224th overall). The Canes then used their second pick in the 11th round to select their first U.S. born player of the 2007 Draft with the 229th selection; Arizona born defenseman Cody Castro of the Bantam AA Peoria Roadrunners.
