The Lethbridge Hurricanes compete in the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Central Division in the Eastern Conference and play their home games at the ENMAX Centre.
The 2022-2023 WHL season is the Hurricanes 36th year in Lethbridge and 52nd for the franchise. The franchise began in Winnipeg in 1967 known as the Winnipeg Jets. The franchise stayed in Winnipeg until the conclusion of the 1976-1977 season. Prior to the 1973-1974 season, the team name changed to the Winnipeg Clubs. They were known as the Clubs until the 1976-1977 season, their last season in Winnipeg, until they changed their name to the Winnipeg Monarchs.
Following the 1976-1977 season, the franchise relocated to Calgary where they became the Calgary Wranglers. The franchise moved to Calgary to replace the Calgary Centennials who became the Billings Bighorns. The Wranglers played at the Stampede Corral for the next ten years before relocating to their current home in Lethbridge as the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes’ first season in Lethbridge was 1987-1988, returning WHL hockey to the Southern Alberta city just one season after the WHL’s Lethbridge Broncos returned to their original home of Swift Current.
Although the Hurricanes missed the playoffs in their first season in Lethbridge, the ‘Canes managed their first playoff appearance and series win against the Prince Albert Raiders in the 1989 playoffs. They were eliminated by the Saskatoon Blades in the East Division Semi-Final.
The Hurricanes used their momentum from the playoffs the next season as they won their first Division title in franchise history. The Hurricanes marched to the League Championship Series but were eliminated in the final by the Kamloops Blazers in the 1990 playoffs.
After winning the East Division for the second consecutive season, the Hurricanes once again stormed through the playoffs to the WHL Championship Series. Unfortunately, the end result was the same as the previous season as the ‘Canes were swept by the Spokane Chiefs who would go on to win the MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The Hurricanes made the post-season in five of the next six seasons. The team’s crowning achievement came in 1996-97, when the Hurricanes captured their first, and only, WHL Championship. The Hurricanes would finish as Memorial Cup runners-up falling in the title game to the host Hull Olympiques. That same year, the Hurricanes also won the Division title (only done twice before, 1989-90 and 1990-91) and the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the top team in the regular season.
It wasn’t until the 2007-08 season that the Hurricanes once again saw WHL playoff success as they advanced past the first round of the WHL Playoffs for the first time in 11 years. They then began a run that didn’t stop until they had claimed the WHL Eastern Conference Championship banner before being swept in the WHL Championship by the Spokane Chiefs, who again went on to capture the Memorial Cup.
The Hurricanes would qualify for the post-season the following year as they advanced to the second round before being swept by the Calgary Hitmen. The ‘Canes suffered some lean years afterwards as the team didn’t make the post-season for six years before a successful 2015-2016 campaign where the Hurricanes would capture their fourth Division title, and first in 19 years, while returning to the WHL’s post-season after a six year absence. The Hurricanes ultimately would fall in five games to the Regina Pats in the first round of the playoffs.
The Hurricanes again built on the success from the prior season in 2016-2017 as they went on to surpass their regular season point totals. The ‘Canes made history in the post-season erasing a three-to-one series deficit for the first time to defeat the Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the WHL Playoffs. The ‘Canes then upended the Medicine Hat Tigers in seven games before falling to the Pats in the Eastern Conference Championship Series.
The ‘Canes followed their strong 2016-2017 campaign with another long post-season march in 2017-2018. After a 33-33-6-0 regular season record that helped them finished second in the Central Division. The Hurricanes eliminated the Red Deer Rebels in five games in the WHL’s opening round before dispatching the Brandon Wheat Kings in five games helping them to their second straight Eastern Conference Championship Series where they would eventually fall in six games to the Swift Current Broncos.
