Lethbridge, AB – After a raucous weekend, the Lethbridge Hurricanes booked their tickets to the second round of the WHL Playoffs with a convincing 4-0 shutout win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday. With the win the Canes took the series 4-2 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1996-1997. This week the Hurricanes enter uncharted territory with a familiar foe as they take on their Central division rivals from Cranbrook in the WHL Eastern Conference Semi-Finals presented by Kal Tire and MNP.

rThe Hurricanes finished the regular season 2nd in the Central division, two spots ahead of the Kootenay Ice, despite only holding a 1-5-0-0 record against them. (Sept.28 – 5-4L; Dec.14 – 4-3L; Dec.15 – 4-3L @Koot.; Dec.31 – 5-2L @Koot.; Feb.12 – 7-1W; Mar.12 – 2-1L @Koot.) Their last game at the ENMAX Centre on February 12th resulted in a 7-1 win for the “Boys from the Bridge”. Mitch Fadden scored twice for Lethbridge and the Canes got single goals from Carter Bancks, Zach Boychuk, Cam Braes, Colton Sceviour and Nick Hotson while Juha Metsola made 21 stops in net.

r- Dynamic Duo – Zach Boychuk and Mitch Fadden continue to be one of the most explosive pairs in the CHL today. Boychuk leads the Canes with eight points (5G, 3A) in the 2008 Playoffs after tallying a goal in each of the Hurricanes first five playoff games. Fadden, the Canes leading scorer in the regular season has continued his success a he has also tallied a team leading eight points (2G, 6A)
r- Defensive Coordinators – Canes Captain Ben Wright and rookie Luca Sbisa are leading the way for the Hurricanes impressive group of defensemen. Wright, the co-winner of the 2008 Lethbridge Dodge Top Defenseman Award has led by
rexample, tallying six points (6A) and leading the team with a plus/minus rating of +6. Sbisa, the 2008 recipient of the Carl Trentini Memorial Award for the Hurricanes Rookie of the Year has continued his impressive rookie campaign with seven points (3G, 4A) in the playoffs, placing him second among WHL defenseman in playoff scoring.
r- Finnish Phenom – Rookie Juha Metsola has posted a Metsola ended the month of March with a 7-3 record, including a 4-1 record in his first WHL Playoff series against the Brandon Wheat Kings. This included a 20 save shutout of the Wheaties on March 30th which earned the Hurricanes their first WHL second round appearance in eleven years. (Game 1: Mar.21st, 2008 – 27 saves – 2-1W; Game 2: Mar.22nd, 2008 – 24 saves – 4-3W; Game 3: Mar.25th, 2008 – 31 saves – 4-3W; Game 6: Mar.30th, 2008 – 20 saves – 4-0W SO)
