Giants Finish Road Trip With A Loss
The Vancouver Giants 3 game winning streak came to an end in Cranbrook, losing 5-2 to the Kootenay Ice Saturday night. Vancouver finishes their five game road trip with a record of 3-2-0-0.
Having been off since Wednesday, Kootenay came out gunning, scoring just 2:44 into the game as newcomer Cody Eakin tipped home his 24th of the season. The ice though got into penalty trouble and the Giants made them pay. On a 5-on-3 Michael Burns banged his 11th of the year to tie the game at 1-1 through 20 minutes of play.
Starting the second period on the power play should have been an advantage for Vancouver, instead Eakin single handedly walked through the Giants scoring a shorthanded marker just seven seconds into the period. The Ice would add a power play goal late in the frame to go up 3-1 after two periods.
Vancouver would cut the lead to one midway through the third period thanks to Andrej Stastny’s 6th goal of the season. Kootenay though would answer back with two more goals in the final 8 minutes to earn a 5-2 victory. Mark Segal made 31 saves in a losing cause.
The Giants now return home and have a week off before heading to Whitehorse, Yukon to take on the Kamloops Blazers next Saturday as part of CBC’s Hockey Day In Canada. Game time is 4:00pm PST. The pregame show starts at 3:30pm PST on AM 650.
