Our 20’s: Galloway’s Short Time in Swift Current Leaves Lasting Impression
While he was only a member of the Swift Current Broncos for about four months, Tyson Galloway certainly made an impact on the city and his teammates.
As the season has come a close for Galloway, and his WHL Career, he said the belief was there for this group to get it done.
“I think it sucks at the end of the year,” Galloway said. “We had the team to go all the way and obviously couldn’t get it done. We played a really good team.”
Galloway, out of Kamloops, B.C. was traded to the Broncos from the Calgary Hitmen on January 10, to help strengthen the Broncos blue line. However, just four games into his Broncos career, Galloway was injured, and missed about three weeks of action before returning for the Broncos stretch run.
Galloway earned assists in his first two games back, and the Broncos won six straight games following his return with the help of Galloway, and fellow deadline acquisition Conor Geekie. Ultimately the team lost three games the rest of the way as the Broncos won the Central Division and locked up the second-seed in the first-round of the WHL Playoffs.
He said after coming from a team in Calgary that was in a different phase, it was great to be a part of that run and he believes the effects of the final months of the season will be a big benefit for some of the younger players as well.
“That was a different feeling for me,” Galloway said. “I really enjoyed, winning and we had a lot of fun coming to the rink and I think that last month, the last two months of the season were, a really big stepping stone for everyone in that gesture, but for the guys that are returning, I think they’re going to benefit immensely from that.”
While only playing 20 games in a Bronco uniform, Galloway also split the Captaincy duties with Owen Pickering, wearing the ‘C’ for road games.
He said it was an honour to have that faith put into him by the staff, Pickering, and the other players.
“For him just to be that humble and stuff like that to split it with me, that was amazing,” he said. “The response, I think that the room had to everything that we’ve done and it made my job, it made Owen’s job, it made all the leaders in there, made the job very easy for us to go up there and compete, and give ourselves a chance to win every day.”
Ultimately, Galloway notched 11 points in his 20 Broncos regular season games with a +24 rating, and would play nine more in the playoffs. In his WHL career with the Clagary Hitmen, Galloway played 216 games across 6 seasons after being a 2nd Round Pick in the 2018 WHL Draft. He tallied 77 points in those 216 games and played in five more playoff games with Calgary.
As his career has wrapped up, Galloway said the people he’s met along the way will certainly stick with him, and the experiences in different markets are things he will never forget.
“I came from probably, you know, one of the biggest markets, and I came to the legit, smallest and it was different and I loved every second of it,” Galloway said. “Whether it’s being two minutes away from your teammates all the time, you just felt more like a team, to be honest, I think the chemistry and the amount that we would be able to see each other paid dividends to the results we had on the ice. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
Galloway was also a fifth-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in the 2021 NHL Draft, but went unsigned and is now a Free Agent. He said his next steps in his career are to hopefully play pro hockey next season.
