RECAP: Silvertips blank Blades Saturday night
Everett, WA – The Saskatoon Blades were victims of the Carter Hart show on Saturday night being shutout 3-0 by the Everett Silvertips. The loss is the second straight for Saskatoon and leaves them with a 10-14-2-1 record on the season, heading into Portland tomorrow night to take on the 2nd best team in the WHL.
Montana Onyebuchi opened the scoring 6:53 into the game causing thousands of Teddy Bears to hit the ice as it was Teddy Toss night in Everett. After a 13 minute delay to clean up the flying fur balls the game resumed. Everett scored again before the first intermission to take a 2-0 lead thanks to Matt Fonteyne’s 13th of the season.
The middle frame was filled with penalties and Saskatoon’s power play was up to the task keeping it a two goal game. A scary moment occurred as Evan Fiala collided with a Silvertip forward trying to prevent a scoring chance resulting in a cut from a skate on the forearm of the Blades captain. Blood poured onto the ice as Fiala dropped both his gloves to clutch his arm and quickly get off the ice. There was a brief delay as the ice crew came out to clean up the puddles of blood on the ice. Fiala was attended to by the Blades Athletic Therapist and the medical staff at the Xfinity Arena and thankfully didn’t end up with a serious injury eventually returning to the game in the 3rd period.
Everett increased their lead in the first minute of the 3rd period as Patrik Bajkov sniped his 15th of the season to make it 3-0 for the home side. The lead help up as did Carter Hart who stopped all 30 shots the Blades threw at him to earn his league leading 4th shutout of the season.
Nolan Maier was the busier of the two facing 37 shots in the game and steering aside 34.
Saskatoon will get a chance to get back into the win column on Sunday as they travel overnight to Portland to take on the Winterhawks. Game time is 5:00pm local time in Portland; 7:00pm in Saskatoon.
