Billet families play a crucial role in our players’ lives. For many of these young men it is their first time moving away from home and we strive to make this transition as easy as possible for them. Billet families must be willing to open their homes and hearts to our players while providing them with a safe a comfortable environment allowing them to grow as athletes, students, and most importantly as a person. In return our players are also expected to display nothing but respect and courtesy to their host families and contribute to daily life in the household.
Becoming a billet family is truly a unique and rewarding experience usually resulting in lifetime relationships. Our players often act as role models and siblings to families with younger children, and keep in touch even after they move onto professional hockey or other avenues. We also work through a process to align players with suitable families to ensure everyone is comfortable.
“Our first year as a billet family was amazing! Caleb (Fantillo) came to our house in October and fit right into our family. He became the ‘older’ brother my kids didn’t have. He helped around the house when he was home. Caleb and my son Ajay had a great bond. Caleb helped Ajay with his hockey and came to watch a few games, he even helped him with his homework! The day Caleb had to go home for the summer was a very sad day in our house. But since he has been gone he and Ajay still text and we have a count down to the day he comes back! The staff was great to deal with and made sure everything was going great! We are definitely looking forward to hockey season starting back up!” – Mike & Amanda Bryksa
