Saturday Highlights: Bulldogs get the job done on Sportsnet

 

HAMILTON 5, KINGSTON 2
The Hamilton Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 but came back strong with five unanswered to defeat visiting Kingston 5-2 on Sportsnet. The Dogs ended a three-game slide as Avery Hayes (12, 13) scored twice, igniting the Teddy Bear Toss with a shorthanded marker midway through the first period. Logan Morrison (15) followed-up his first OHL hat-trick with the game winner 7:03 into the second period while Nathan Staios (3) and Ryan Winterton (7) also scored for Hamilton. Kingston’s Shane Wright (16) scored in a sixth straight game, extending his point streak to 11 while Zayde Wisdom (17) also found the back of the net. Hamilton outshot Kingston 43-25 as rookie Marco Costantini made 23 saves for the win opposite Kingston’s Ryan Dugas who made 38 saves. The Bulldogs win came before a crowd of 5,321 as Hamilton improved to 14-17-2-0. Kingston falls to 9-17-2-2, eight points back of the fourth place Bulldogs in the East Division.

SARNIA 7, MISSISSAUGA 6
Jacob Perreault’s (17, 18, 19) late goal was the final salvo in a back-and-forth contest between Mississauga and host Sarnia as the 2020 NHL Draft prospect recorded his first OHL hat-trick in a 7-6 victory. Perreault netted the winner with 1:05 remaining in the third period, getting a nice assist from Ryan Roth as the Sting battled from behind to take a hard fought two points. Perreault had three goals while first star Anthony Tabak (7, 8) recorded two goals and a career-high four points while Ryan McGregor (9) had a five point afternoon with a goal and four assists. Justin Nolet (4) also scored for Sarnia while overage winger Sean Josling finished the game with four helpers. William Portokalis (4), Calvin Martin (9), Cole Schwindt (8), Nick Isaacson (8), Aidan Prueter (5) and James Hardie (11) scored Mississauga goals while Thomas Harley had a pair of assists as the Trout fell to 10-19-2-0. Sarnia outshot Mississauga 34-28, earning a third straight win to improve to 15-16-0-0.

OWEN SOUND 4, SUDBURY 0
Rookie Nick Chenard made 20 saves for his first career OHL shutout as the Owen Sound Attack blanked the Sudbury Wolves 4-0 on the road. Kaleb Pearson (9, 10) scored twice for the Bears while rookie Kaleb Lawrence (1) scored his first career marker and Brady Lyle (10) also lit the lamp. The Attack outshot the Wolves 29-20, handing Sudbury its third straight loss. Owen Sound improves to 14-12-3-2 while the Central Division-leading Wolves fall to 18-14-1-0.

SAGINAW 5, FLINT 3
The Saginaw Spirit completed the sweep of a home-and-home with rival Flint as Cole Coskey (17) scored his second third period game winning goal in as many nights, lifting the host Spirit to a 5-3 victory. Cole Perfetti (17, 18) brought the teddy bears down to the ice at The Dow Event Center midway through the first period and struck again just over five minutes later. DJ Busdeker (6) and Damien Giroux (20) also scored Saginaw goals while blueliners Reilly Webb and Mitchell Smith both collected two assists. Vancouver Canucks prospect Ethan Keppen (11), Cody Morgan (9) and Brennan Othmann (7) responded with Flint goals as the Firebirds were outshot 39-27. The Spirit earn their third straight win, widening their edge to four points over Flint atop the West Division with an 18-10-2-2 record. The Firebirds fall to 18-13-0-0.

OTTAWA 7, BARRIE 2
The Ottawa 67’s have won 10 in a row for the first time since the 1999-2000 season as five different players had multi-point games in a 7-2 win over visiting Barrie. NHL Draft prospect Jack Quinn (16, 17) scored twice while Noel Hoefenmayer picked up three assists. Yanic Crete (7), Joseph Garreffa (17), Mitchell Hoelscher (18), Austen Keating (16) and Marco Rossi (18) added Ottawa goals as the 67’s outshot the Colts 40-27 and went 3-for-8 on the power play. Barrie captain Jason Willms (11, 12) provided both goals for his club as the Colts dropped their fifth straight decision, falling to 13-13-1-1. Cedrick Andree made 25 saves as the 67’s improve to 23-6-0-0 on the campaign.

KITCHENER 6, GUELPH 1
As good as they’ve been this season, the Guelph Storm were no match for the Kitchener Rangers on Saturday as the Blueshirts plowed their way to a ninth straight win, quelling the host Storm by a score of 6-1. Florida Panthers prospect Greg Meireles (7, 8, 9) scored a hat-trick while Riley Damiani (12), Jonathan Yantsis (19) and Declan McDonnell (7) rounded out the Kitchener offence. Arizona Coyotes prospect Axel Bergkvist continued his strong play of late with three assists to give him points in five of his last six outings. Pavel Gogolev (23) scored Guelph’s Teddy Bear Toss goal midway through the second period, giving the Russian-born winger seven goals over his last three games. Kitchener outshot Guelph 46-36 as Jacob Ingham turned aside 35 shots to improve to 12-3-2-1 on the season. Kitchener climbs to 16-10-2-2 for third in the Midwest Division while Guelph owns a first place 19-7-1-3 mark.
