Knights add Capitals prospect Cam Allen in trade with Storm
The London Knights already had a solid blueline, and it just got more dynamic with the acquisition of Guelph Storm defenceman Cam Allen on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights added the 19-year-old Washington Capitals prospect in exchange for 17-year-old blueliner Noah Jenken and seven draft picks including a pair of second round picks, a pair of third round picks, a pair of fourth round picks and a fifth round choice.
“Cam is a high-end defenceman in our league,” said Knights Vice-President and General Manager Mark Hunter. “He’s played in the OHL for a long time and can bring more veteran presence to our back end. He’s a mobile, two-way player and we’re thrilled to have Cam be a London Knight. With that said, we are sad to see a young man like Noah go the other way, but it’s a good opportunity for him and we know he’ll do well in the future.”
Allen dons green and gold with the 25-6-0-0 Knights in the midst of a season that has seen him excel in Guelph, earning an invitation to Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp. He had been the Storm’s top point producer with 25 points (7-18–25) over 27 contests, sitting tied for second on the team with 91 shots on goal.
“This was a very difficult decision for our organization,” said Storm General Manager George Burnett. “Cam has been a tremendous player, leader, and community ambassador for the Storm over the last four years and we hope that the relationship between Cam, his family, and the Storm continues in the future.”
A former third overall OHL Priority Selection choice by Guelph in 2021 who went on to earn OHL Rookie of the Year honours, Allen has overcome a 2023-24 season that saw injuries limit him to 25 games. He was Washington’s fifth round pick in 2023 and signed an entry-level deal with the Caps back in July.
The move follows a deal that saw Vancouver Canucks prospect Vilmer Alriksson dealt to the Brampton Steelheads on Monday as the Storm, who sit at the bottom of the Western Conference through 30 games with a record of 9-18-2-1, replenish their arsenal of draft selections. The Storm added forward depth in a separate deal on Tuesday, acquiring Justin Bottineau from the rival Kitchener Rangers.
Jenken, a left shot at 6-foot-3 and 190Ibs., will get plenty of opportunity in Guelph after being London’s fourth round pick in 2023. The Ilderton, Ont. native has seven assists through 30 games this season.
Allen joins the Knights on Wednesday night as they travel to take on the Erie Otters. Guelph’s next action comes Thursday night in Windsor.
