IceDogs Can’t Capture Win Over Wolves
SUDBURY, ON – The Niagara IceDogs battled hard but fell just short in a tightly contested matchup against the Sudbury Wolves on Thursday night at the Sudbury Community Arena, dropping a 3-2 decision.
The IceDogs found themselves in an early deficit as Sudbury’s Kieron Walton opened the scoring at 12:39 of the first period. Despite the setback, Niagara kept pushing.
Their persistence paid off in the second frame when Ryan Roobroeck netted his 37th goal of the season at 14:20, burying a feed from Ethan Czata and Braidy Wassilyn to even the score at 1-1.
With the assist, 16-year-old Wassilyn made franchise history, breaking the IceDogs’ record for most assists in a single season by a rookie with 31, surpassing Pano Fimis’ previous mark of 30 set in his 2021-22 rookie season with the club.
The IceDogs carried their momentum into the third period, as Kevin He gave Niagara its first lead of the night just over four minutes in, converting on a setup from Jack Brauti and Mathieu Paris.
Sudbury, however, responded quickly. Tayjon Street pulled the Wolves even at 8:31 before Quentin Musty netted the eventual game-winner on a 5-on-3 power play less than a minute later.
Goaltender Hayden Jeffery delivered another strong performance for the IceDogs, stopping 28 shots and keeping his team in the fight with several key saves throughout the night.
Niagara pressed hard for the equalizer late in the game, generating several high-danger chances, but were unable to beat Sudbury’s Finn Marshall down the stretch.
Despite the loss, the IceDogs showed resilience and determination throughout the contest, with Wassilyn’s record-breaking performance serving as a bright spot. Niagara will look to bounce back tomorrow night when they take on the North Bay Battalion at Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
