Sherwood Scores Lone Goal in 4-1 Loss to Saginaw Friday
Saginaw, Mich. – Kole Sherwood scored the only goal for the Flint Firebirds in a 4-1 loss to the Saginaw Spirit before more than 4,400 fans at the Dow Event Center Friday night.
Saginaw’s DJ Busdeker opened the scoring 3:09 into the first frame after he redirected Filip Hronek’s (Detroit Red Wings) shot from the slot for his fifth goal of the season.
Kole Sherwood (Columbus Blue Jackets) evened the score 1-1 when he tallied his 28th goal of the season at the 10:42 mark of the first period. Ryan Moore found a streaking Sherwood behind the Saginaw defense. Sherwood deked to his forehand and fired a shot top-shelf past Evan Cormier (New Jersey Devils) to tie the contest. After scoring on the play, Sherwood has recorded 32 points (15G, 17A) in his last 16 contests and has 14 goals in his past 12 games. Moore’s assist on the play earned him 13 points (7G, 6A) in his previous eight games while Maurizio Colella also notched an assist on the goal.
Hronek regained Saginaw’s lead after he ripped a wrist-shot from the left-point, through a screen in front of the net, that beat Forrest blocker-side at 14:43 of the first period.
The Spirit doubled their lead when Kris Bennett lit-the-lamp with 4:46 remaining in the first period. From behind the Firebird net, Hayden Hodgson dished a puck to Bennett at the right side of the goal. Bennett banked the puck off a Firebirds’ skate and into the net.
Busdeker sealed the game, scoring his second goal of the night, on an empty net with 2:19 remaining in the final frame.
Saginaw outshot Flint 38-28. Flint was scoreless on two power-play chances but were one-for-one on the penalty kill. Flint holds a 4-2 season series lead in the best-of-eight series of the Coors Lights I-75 Divide Cup. The next game between the two clubs is slated for Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Dow Event Center. Forrest made 34 saves on 38 shots.
