Firebirds Import Selection Markas Samenas Commits to Flint
Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds announced today that 2023 CHL Import selection Markas Samenas has committed to an Ontario Hockey League standard player agreement with the club.
“We are excited to officially add Markas to our Firebirds family,” General Manager Dave McParlan said. “Markas has tremendous size to go along with great maturity and versatility that fits perfectly with what we are looking for at center or on the wing.”
Samenas re-entered the Import Draft after playing last season with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The 6-foot-5, 216-pound forward scored 6 G and added 7 A in 55 GP for the Titan this year.
“I’m extremely honored to be part of such a great organization and team that’s building to be a contender,” Samenas said. “With playing in the CHL last year, I feel like having that experience is going to help me contribute to the Firebirds.”
Prior to his time in the Q, Samenas played in his home country of Sweden for Karlskrona HK of the J18 Region and J20 Nationell. In 29 GP for Karlskrona HK J18 during the 2021-22 season, he scored 7 G and added 14 A. Samenas will wear number 42 for Flint.
Scouting Report from Head Scout Mike Oliverio: “We had the opportunity to watch some video on Markas as well as see him at a few spring/summer skates. Markas competes hard every time he is on the ice and has a very good hockey IQ. We also feel he adds a lot of skill and quickness with a heavy shot. We liked the fact he was already acclimated to the North American style of game.”
The Flint Firebirds are now less than a month away from the regular season! They return to action on Friday, September 29 at 7:07 p.m. against the Soo in the GFL Memorial Gardens and for the Home Opener against the Kitchener Rangers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30.
