Firebirds Fall at Home to Owen Sound, 4-2
FLINT, Mich. – Coulson Pitre and Simon Slavicek both struck for goals in the opening period to put their team ahead but the Owen Sound Attack scored four unanswered goals and went on to beat the Flint Firebirds, 4-2, on Saturday night at the Dort Financial Center.
Flint opened the scoring in the first period when Marko Stojkov swooped below the net and found Pitre alone in the slot. He gathered the pass and ripped a wrist shot past Carter George. Pitre’s sixth goal in his past three games put the Firebirds on top, 1-0.
Then, in the final minute of the first, Slavicek poked the puck loose at the blue line and Nolan Dann ran it down in the attacking zone. He left a pass for Slavicek who muscled it over the goal line and extended the Flint lead to 2-0.
Owen Sound got on the board early in the second period when it cycled the puck in the attacking zone and found Sam Sedley above the right circle. He fired a wrist shot through traffic and past Jacob Brown to make the score 2-1. The Attack then tied the game after Taos Jordan took a wrist shot from the blue line that was blocked by bodies in front of the net. It popped back to Ben Cormier who flipped the rebound past Brown, evening the score at two.
Near the halfway point of the third the Firebirds turned the puck over along their own blue line and Tomislav Brennan sprung Servac Petrovsky for a breakaway. Petrovsky carried the puck in and flicked a wrist shot past Brown, giving Owen Sound its first lead of the game.
The Attack grabbed an insurance goal five minutes later after Jordan found Cormier who skated the puck to the right circle. He sent a snap shot past Brown on the far side and the lead grew to two.
Flint pulled Brown for an extra attacker in the final minutes of the game but could not crack George again. Owen Sound hung on and took the win, 4-2.
The Firebirds dropped to 9-9-1-1 in the loss while the Attack improved to 10-9-2-0. Flint will return to action on Sunday afternoon on the road in Sarnia to take on the Sting. Puck drop at Progressive Auto Sales Arena is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
