PETES EDGE BARRIE 4-3
The Barrie Colts played their final home game of the 2010-11 season Saturday night at the BMC in front of their faithful fans who have been so supportive this season.
The Colts were unable to play spoiler against a Peterborough team that are just ahead of Barrie in the Eastern Conference standings. The Petes scored twice in the first period and Bryce O’Hagan turned aside 31 of 34 shots as the Petes disposed of the Colts 4-3.
Justin Larson had a goal and an assist and was named the first star for his efforts. Joey West, Lino Martschini and Geoff Bezruchko also scored for Peterborough, who are now just one point out of the playoffs after Belleville lost to the Wolves.
Steven Beyers scores twice for Barrie and opened the scoring off a great Mark Scheifele pass. Colin Behenna also picked up an assist on Beyers’ 22nd.
The Petes then scored back to back goals in 89 seconds, including a short-handed tally by Bezruchko, to take a 2-1 lead after the first.
The clubs exchanged goals in the middle stanza to make it 3-2 Petes after 40 minutes. Steven Beyers was hauled down and awarded a penalty shot on O’Hagan at the 13:55 mark. Beyers slowly moved his way in on O’Hagan and snapped a quick shot by the Petes goalie.
Martschini answered for Peterborough with his 20th.
Justin Larson made it 4-2 Petes from Alan Quine and Austin Watson at the nine-minute mark of the final frame. Brandon Devlin got that one back with a blast from the point from Matt Ashman and Scheifele.
Clint Windsor made 21 stops and was sent to the bench for the final minute of play as the Colts pushed for the game-tying goal. A few chances came up but Barrie was unable to tie the game and dropped their final home game of the season.
The Colts will conclude their season Sunday in Mississauga at 2:00 p.m.
