Colts defeat Attack 4-3
The Barrie Colts and Owen Sound Attack played against one another for the second straight day, this time at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Colts found themselves trailing 2-0, but battled back to a 4-3 victory and are now 2-0 early in pre-season action.
The Attack opened the scoring at 5:44 of the first period on a power play marker by Ethan Szypula. Thomas Schemitsch and Connor Walters were credited with the assists.
Barrie fired 9 shots at netminder Michael McNiven, but was unable to put one to the back of the net as the Attack took a 1-0 into the first intermission.
In the later stages of the second period, Attack forward Ethan Szypula increased Owen Sounds lead with his second power play goal of the night. Barrie responded quickly with their own power play marker, as Garrett Hooey banged one home on the doorstep to bring the Colts back within one.
A chippy second period saw the Attack hold a 2-1 lead after forty minutes.
Just 1:41 into the final period, Matthew Kreis scored his second goal of the pre-season on a backhander that beat goaltender Brandon Hope. Givani Smith and Cordell James picked up the assists.
Midway through the third period Barrie would take their first lead of the game. From his knees in the slot, Andrew Mangiapane ripped a shot off the post and in blocker side to give the Colts a 3-2 lead. The lead lasted all but 33 seconds as Thomas Schemitsch buried a one-timer from the side of the net to beat goalie Mackenzie Blackwood.
At 13:51 Roy Radke scored his first pre-season goal off a nice feed from forward Garrett Hooey to give the Colts a 4-3 lead. Despite a late charge by the Attack, Barrie fought hard to preserve the 4-3 victory and second straight win versus Owen Sound.
Mackenzie Blackwood and Daniel Gibl combined for 23 saves in the win.
Barrie will play their third pre-season game this Thursday September 4th as Connor McDavid and the Erie Otters head to the Barrie Molson Centre for a 7:30 game. Click here for tickets.
