COLTS VS WOLVES
The Barrie Colts made what they hope will be their last trip of the season to Sudbury for a rare Tuesday night affair against the Wolves. The Colts had won just one of three games in Sudbury coming in to tonight`s contest, but have now won three straight against Sudbury, including a 7-0 rout in Barrie last Thursday night.
The Colts scored twice in the shootout and tie the season-series with the Wolves after a 5-4 final.
Chris Buonomo had a goal and two assists for Barrie; Ivan Telegin scored twice and Daniel Erlich scored a key goal in the third period and put home the game-winner in the shootout. Mark Scheifele had a pair of assists for the Colts and Mathias Niederberger stopped 36 of 40 shots in regulation and both shots he faced in overtime.
Josh McFadden and Michael Sgarbossa both had three assists for the Wolves, Joshua Leivo had a pair of goals, while Derek Schoenmakers and Justin Sefton also scored for Sudbury.
Sudbury opened the scoring on the power play when McFadden took a shot from the point that was tipped in neatly by Schonemakers to make it 1-0 Wolves. Shortly after Barrie responded when Scheifele found a wide-open Buonomo who blasted home his first goal of the year in the 66th game of the season.
Telegin scored both of his goals in the second period, as each club netted a pair in the middle stanza to make it 3-3 after 40 minutes. Telegin finished off a two-on-one rush led by Zach Hall with his 21st goal in the last 21 games. Buonomo picked up his second point of the night with an assist on the play.
The Wolves then sprung Leivo coming out of the penalty box, and while Niederberger made the first save, he couldn`t stop the rebound as Leivo tied the game at three.
Barrie got in to penalty trouble with a pair of players in the box and just as the 5-on-3 ended, Leivo notched his second of the period to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead. The Colts would square things at three on a beautiful passing play that saw Tanner Pearson get the puck to Steven Beyers who then went to Telegin at the side of the net for a carbon copy of his first goal of the game.
Erlich scored early in the third to give the Colts another lead; Scheifele and Buonomo assisted on the play, as Buonomo picks up his third point of the game on the go-ahead goal.
Sefton tied things for the Wolves to push the game to overtime and eventually a shootout where Barrie scored on two of three attempts and take home the win.
Barrie has just two more regular season games left on their schedule and have clinched the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The Colts will play in Mississauga on Friday and then wrap up the regular season on Saturday at home to the Brampton Battalion.
The Colts were once again without Colin Behenna who sat out the fourth game of his eight-game suspension. The Colts captain is due back for the third game of the post-season.
