The Barrie Colts will have a strong presence at the international level this November, as defencemen Lucas Matheson and Declan McNally have been selected to represent Canada at the 2026 U17 World Challenge, while Colts head coach Dylan Smoskowitz has been named head coach of Canada White.
Matheson will represent Canada Red, while McNally will suit up for Canada White. Smoskowitz will lead Canada White behind the bench as the tournament brings together some of the top under-17 hockey talent from Canada and around the world.
The 2026 U17 World Challenge runs November 1–7 at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ontario.
Matheson Earns Canada Red Selection
Matheson has made an immediate impression at the major junior level, showcasing his hockey IQ, skill and competitive instincts. His ability to contribute with the puck has helped establish him as a promising young defenceman with the Colts.
Colts head coach Dylan Smoskowitz praised Matheson’s early impact and the qualities he will bring to the Canadian roster.
“Lucas has been able to immediately demonstrate his high hockey IQ and skill at the major junior level. His play with the puck, and natural compete will make him a real weapon for Team Canada.”
Matheson will now have the opportunity to build on his early OHL experience while representing his country on the international stage.
McNally Selected for Canada White
Joining Matheson on the international stage is defenceman Declan McNally, who has earned a spot on Canada White. At just 16 years old, McNally has continued to develop his game through hard work, attention to detail and a willingness to compete.
Smoskowitz highlighted McNally’s maturity, physical presence and commitment to improvement as key attributes that will make him a valuable addition to the Canadian roster.
“Declan is a 16 year old pro. Everyday we see improvements in his details, as he works extremely hard to fine tune his game. He’s big, smart and mean. He will be a valuable asset to Team Canada.”
McNally’s selection represents an important milestone in his young career, providing an opportunity to compete against top international talent and continue his development with Canada’s national under-17 program.
Smoskowitz to Lead Canada White
The Colts’ representation extends behind the bench, with Smoskowitz set to make his international coaching debut as head coach of Canada White.
Following his first season behind the bench in Barrie, Smoskowitz will take on the opportunity to lead Canada’s next generation of hockey talent at the U17 World Challenge. The appointment recognizes his work at the major junior level and places him among the coaching staff entrusted with developing Canada’s top young players.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Smoskowitz spoke about the significance of joining Hockey Canada’s national program.
“It’s somewhat surreal to think about all the names that have been and currently are associated with Hockey Canada, and know that you are now a part of that family. I can’t wait to get to Oakville and get to work.”
Smoskowitz will guide Canada White through the tournament, which features competition against some of the world’s strongest under-17 programs.
A Proud Moment for the Colts
With two players selected to represent Canada and their head coach leading one of the national teams, the U17 World Challenge marks a significant opportunity for the Barrie Colts organization.
Matheson and McNally will look to make their mark on the international stage, while Smoskowitz prepares to lead Canada White in front of a home-country crowd.
The 2026 U17 World Challenge opens November 1 in Oakville, with Canada White facing Czechia and Canada Red taking on Finland to begin preliminary-round action.
