Knights Down the Colts 5-3
Alec Regula would lead the attack for the London Knights scoring a goal and 2 assists defeating the Barrie Colts 5-3 Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.
After a tough loss in Kitchener Tuesday night the Colts were hoping to get a boost with the return of Andrei Svechnikov and Alexei Lipanov into the lineup to get back in the win column.
It would be a slow start for both teams as many of the players were likely still warming up from the frigid conditions outside.
With just over five minutes remaining in the opening period the Knights would kill off a Barrie powerplay the puck would come back to Shane Collins. He’d send a low slap shot through traffic beating Edmonds to give the Knights the first lead of the game.
Barrie would outshoot the Knights 13-5 in the opening 20 minutes but head into the second down by 1.
It wouldn’t take long for the Colts to answer. At 5:08 of the second, Joey Keane skating below the Knights goal would find Jaden Peca alone into the slot. Knights starter Jordan Kooy would make the initial save on the one time blast, but Peca would bury the second opportunity for his 6th of the season. T.J. Fergus would also assist on the play.
Just three minutes later the Knights would respond right back. After a shot from Regula would miss wide the bounce would ricochet right back out front leaving Richard Whittaker with an open cage to go back ahead.
Alexey Lipanov would get one of the best opportunities of the period, skating in off the right wing, the Russian centre would have his pass attempt blocked coming right back to his stick but would be absolutely robbed by the glove hand of Kooy.
The Colts would keep up the pressure and just seconds later cash in. At 16:06, Tyler Tucker would send a shot on net, Kooy would make the initial save but Andrei Svechnikov would be right on the doorstep to bury his 15th of the season to knot things up once again.
The scoring wouldn’t be done yet. After a goal would be called back against the Knights with just under two minutes remaining in the middle frame London would stay on the attack. Before the period was out Regula would snap a shot off the post beating Edmonds to regain the lead making it a 3-2 game heading into the third.
In the final frame at 14:23 the Knights would add the insurance marker. While on the powerplay Sam Miletic would fire a shot from the blue line being redirected by Cole Tymkin to make it a 4-2 game.
The Colts would manage to get one back, after the Knights would go down two men to penalties Alexei Lipanov would slide a pass back to T.J. Fergus, he’d snap a wrist shot passed Kooy to get within one, but with under a minute to play and the goalie pulled Miletic would put the icing on the cake sending it into the open cage.
Next up, the Colts will be on home ice once again Saturday night to host to the Kingston Frontenacs
