Meet Team CHL: Alexis Joseph brings size, skill, and leadership
Saint John’s towering playmaker brings a standout rookie season and international experience to the 2026 CHL USA Prospects Challenge presented by Primaris.
Alexis Joseph gives opponents in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) plenty to consider down the middle.
At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, the Saint John Sea Dogs centre pairs an imposing presence with the vision to create for teammates and a scoring touch of his own. Those qualities helped make him the QMJHL’s highest-scoring 16-year-old last season. They have also earned him a place on Team CHL.
The 17-year-old from Lachenaie, Que., was among the first four players named to the team on September 23, joining Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) centre Brock England, Saginaw Spirit (OHL) left winger Dima Zhilkin and Québec Remparts (QMJHL) centre Carter Meyer for December’s two-game series against the U.S. National Under-18 Team.
For NHL Central Scouting, Joseph’s appeal lies in the combination of his physical gifts and his ability to make the players around him dangerous.

In the CHL’s announcement, Karl Stewart, Vice President and Director of NHL Central Scouting, described him as “that big, playmaking centre capable of being the difference-maker that all NHL teams covet.”
That feel for the game was already drawing wider attention during Joseph’s first months in the QMJHL. In a November 2025 profile for FloHockey, Chris Peters described him as a centre with “skill, hockey sense and a game far more mature than his age would suggest.”
Saint John had made Joseph the first overall pick in the 2025 QMJHL Draft after he developed with the Lanaudière Pionniers and Collège Esther-Blondin Phénix. His first points for the Sea Dogs arrived in memorable fashion: a hat trick in Halifax on September 27, 2025.
By season’s end, he had recorded 24 goals and 60 points in 54 games, finishing second on the team in scoring and earning QMJHL Rookie All-Star Team honours. He also led all league rookies with four shorthanded goals, giving Saint John an offensive threat even when it was down a skater.

Behind that production, Joseph was making an impression with the way he approached his development. In a November 2025 interview with FloHockey’s Adrien Wilmot, Travis Crickard, then the Sea Dogs’ head coach, described a young player who asked questions and put in extra work, including time in the gym after games.
“His future holds so many positive things because he’s so curious and so driven to improve,” Crickard told Wilmot.
That maturity also carried onto the international stage. Wearing the captain’s “C” for Canada Red at the 2025 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Truro, N.S., Joseph led the tournament with 13 points in five games, helping his team win gold and earning tournament All-Star honours. Against many of the best players in his age group, he was both a leader and an offensive focal point.
After representing Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship, Joseph took on another leadership role at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August. As an alternate captain, he helped Canada complete an unbeaten tournament that ended with an 8–1 victory over the United States in the final.
For Joseph, that gold medal also came with lessons. Speaking with RDS.ca’s Nicolas Landry, he acknowledged that his three-point performance in five games had fallen short of his own expectations. He said the experience reinforced his determination to arrive prepared, take nothing for granted and make the most of his next opportunity to represent Canada.

Those experiences give Joseph plenty to build on as he enters his NHL Draft season. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button placed him 10th on his September list for 2027, highlighting his hockey sense and puck skills while identifying pace of play as an area for further growth.
“He’s got the brain. He’s got the hands,” Button said in TSN’s September draft rankings feature.
In Saint John, his goals extend beyond the scoresheet. Joseph told Landry he wants to earn greater responsibility, with faceoffs and defensive reliability central to his development.
“This year, I’d like to be out there if we have a big faceoff to win. If we need a big goal, I want to be out there,” he told RDS in French. “To be the go-to guy. I think that would be my goal.”
His second season in Saint John will also include two prospect showcases. Before joining Team CHL, Joseph will take part in the QMJHL Prospects Game presented by BFL Canada on October 28 in Gatineau, having been among NHL Central Scouting’s first six selections for the event.
December will bring a reunion with England, his teammate on Canada’s gold-medal teams at both the U17 Hockey Challenge and Hlinka Gretzky Cup. It will also mark a first for Saint John: Joseph is set to become the club’s first participant in the CHL USA Prospects Challenge.

Across that event and the former CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, he will be the 16th Sea Dog to represent the franchise, joining a showcase tradition that includes Jonathan Huberdeau, Nathan Beaulieu and Thomas Chabot.
For Joseph, the series will mean representing Saint John in his home province, alongside leading prospects from across the CHL. Fans in Chicoutimi and Québec City will get a close look at a centre who has already shown he can score, create and lead.
The 2026 CHL USA Prospects Challenge presented by Primaris opens December 1 at the Georges-Vézina Centre in Chicoutimi before moving to the Vidéotron Centre in Québec City on December 2.
