400 CHL alumni named to NHL Opening Night rosters ahead of the 2026-27 season
CHL graduates account for 47.9% of NHL Opening Night rosters, with all 32 NHL clubs and 60 of 61 CHL franchises represented
As the National Hockey League (NHL) opens its 2026-27 season tonight, 400 graduates of the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) feature on Opening Night rosters. Together, they account for 47.9% of the 835 players listed across all 32 clubs, making the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) the most represented development hockey league in the world. Both totals include players on injured reserve and other non-roster lists.
The total includes 191 alumni of the OHL, 128 from the WHL and 82 from the QMJHL. Penguins forward Oliver Okuliar, who played for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Sherbrooke Phoenix, is included in both the WHL and QMJHL figures but counted once in the overall total of 400 (see complete list below).
All 32 NHL clubs feature at least one CHL graduate. The St. Louis Blues lead with 19, followed by the Vegas Golden Knights with 18, the San Jose Sharks with 17, the Seattle Kraken with 16, and the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins with 15 each. CHL alumni make up a majority of the players listed by 11 NHL clubs, led by Vegas (69.2%), St. Louis (67.9%) and Seattle (64.0%).
Across the CHL, 60 of 61 current franchises are represented when earlier franchise identities are included. The London Knights lead with 30 alumni, followed by the Erie Otters with 16 and the Barrie Colts, Flint Firebirds and Windsor Spitfires with 15 each. Flint’s total includes players who represented the Plymouth Whalers. The Seattle Thunderbirds lead the WHL with 15, while the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Moncton Wildcats share the QMJHL lead with 11 each.
The group also includes graduates of the first two editions of the CHL USA Prospects Challenge, including Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters / OHL), Sharks forward Michael Misa (Saginaw Spirit / OHL), Penguins forward Ben Kindel (Calgary Hitmen / WHL) and Ducks forward Nikita Klepov (Saginaw Spirit / OHL). The 2026 CHL USA Prospects Challenge presented by Primaris takes place December 1 in Chicoutimi and December 2 in Québec City.
This year’s total extends the six-season streak reported last year to seven consecutive seasons with at least 390 CHL alumni on NHL Opening Night rosters.
News and Notes
- CHL alumni enter 2026-27 looking to make it nine straight Stanley Cup champions with at least 10 graduates and five consecutive Conn Smythe Trophy winners. Last season, Carolina won the Cup with 10 CHL alumni, while Jordan Staal (Peterborough Petes / OHL) became the seventh graduate in 10 years to earn playoff MVP honours.
- CHL graduates account for 19 of the NHL’s 29 captains (65.5%). Entering his 22nd NHL season, Sidney Crosby (Rimouski Océanic / QMJHL) will set the NHL record with his 20th season as captain, passing Steve Yzerman (Peterborough Petes / OHL). Four of the six captains entering at least their 10th season in the role are graduates: Crosby (20), Gabriel Landeskog (Kitchener Rangers / OHL; 15), Jamie Benn (Kelowna Rockets / WHL; 14) and Connor McDavid (Erie Otters / OHL; 11).
- Five of the eight NHL captains appointed this September are CHL graduates: Chicago’s Connor Bedard (Regina Pats / WHL), St. Louis’s Robert Thomas (London Knights, Hamilton Bulldogs / OHL), the Islanders’ Bo Horvat (London Knights / OHL), Los Angeles’s Drew Doughty (Guelph Storm / OHL) and Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot (Saint John Sea Dogs / QMJHL).
- At least 75 NHL head, associate and assistant coaches have CHL roots, including 21 of 32 head coaches (65.6%), through playing or staff roles in the WHL, OHL or QMJHL. Manny Malhotra (Guelph Storm / OHL) and Ryan Craig (Brandon Wheat Kings / WHL) begin their first seasons as NHL head coaches in Vancouver and Vegas, respectively, while former WHL coaches Jim Hiller (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Mike Babcock (Edmonton Oilers) take over new teams.
- More than 200 people with CHL roots work in non-playing NHL roles, including coaches, executives, scouts, development staff, equipment managers and athletic therapists. Recent appointments include Freddie Hamilton (Niagara IceDogs / OHL) as Toronto’s chief of staff and Vukie Mpofu (Red Deer Rebels / WHL) as Nashville’s assistant general manager.
Stories to Follow
- Toronto’s Gavin McKenna (Medicine Hat Tigers / WHL) and Anaheim’s Nikita Klepov (Saginaw Spirit / OHL) and Roger McQueen (Brandon Wheat Kings / WHL) are among the graduates eyeing their NHL debuts.
- Thirteen CHL graduates are chasing their 1,000th NHL game, led by Taylor Hall (Windsor Spitfires / OHL), just 11 games away. The others are Casey Cizikas (Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors / OHL), Zach Bogosian (Peterborough Petes / OHL), Tyler Toffoli (Ottawa 67’s / OHL), Jonathan Huberdeau (Saint John Sea Dogs / QMJHL), Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts / OHL), Cody Ceci (Ottawa 67’s, Owen Sound Attack / OHL), Sean Couturier (Drummondville Voltigeurs / QMJHL), Morgan Rielly (Moose Jaw Warriors / WHL), Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads / QMJHL), J.T. Miller (Plymouth Whalers / OHL), Marcus Foligno (Sudbury Wolves / OHL) and Ryan Strome (Barrie Colts & Niagara IceDogs / OHL).
- Five graduates are within 100 points of 1,000 career points: Jamie Benn (Kelowna Rockets / WHL), Corey Perry (London Knights / OHL), Brent Burns and Matt Duchene (both Brampton Battalion / OHL), and Mark Scheifele.
- Steven Stamkos (Sarnia Sting / OHL) and Connor McDavid (Erie Otters / OHL) need 44 and 80 points, respectively, to reach 1,300. Leon Draisaitl (Prince Albert Raiders, Kelowna Rockets / WHL) needs 47, and Brad Marchand (Moncton Wildcats, Val-d’Or Foreurs & Halifax Mooseheads / QMJHL) needs 66 to reach 1,100.
- Four of the five active players within 50 goals of 400 career goals are CHL graduates: Matt Duchene, Claude Giroux (Gatineau Olympiques / QMJHL), Mark Scheifele and Tyler Seguin (Plymouth Whalers / OHL).
- Colorado’s Brent Burns enters the season with 1,007 consecutive games, needing 58 more to break the NHL record of 1,064 — potentially against Columbus on Feb. 15, 2027. Among defencemen, he also needs four points to enter the all-time top 10, 14 to pass Larry Robinson (Kitchener Rangers / OHL) for ninth, 16 goals to pass Larry Murphy (Peterborough Petes / OHL) for sixth, and two game-winning goals to tie for second.
- After a 23-goal, 59-point rookie season, Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters / OHL) needs two goals to pass Bobby Orr (Oshawa Generals / OHL; 24) and Ray Bourque (Verdun Éperviers / QMJHL; 23) for the second-most goals by a teenage defenceman. Another 41 points would make him just the second blueliner to reach 100 points before turning 20.
- Following the consolidation of Winnipeg’s records, Mark Scheifele trails Dale Hawerchuk (Cornwall Royals / QMJHL) by seven goals and 22 points for the franchise leads. He is also 19 helpers shy of tying the Jets’ assist record.
- Reigning Art Ross Trophy winner Connor McDavid extended the CHL’s run of scoring champions to 13 consecutive seasons. His next 100-point campaign would tie Mario Lemieux (Laval Voisins / QMJHL; 10) for second all-time and make him the second player with seven straight. McDavid also eyes a third 90-assist season, a fourth 130-point campaign — his second straight — and a chance to become the third-fastest player to reach 900 assists.
- Reigning Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov (Québec Remparts & Rouyn-Noranda Huskies / QMJHL) needs 14 points to pass Steven Stamkos as Tampa Bay’s all-time scoring leader. He can also become the second player with five straight 80-assist seasons, the first Lightning player with 10 30-goal campaigns, and the third player born outside North America with five consecutive 100-point seasons.
- Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby (Rimouski Océanic / QMJHL) needs 11 points to move into sixth all-time and 39 to become the fifth player — and fourth Canadian — to reach 1,800. Three assists would move him past Joe Thornton (Soo Greyhounds / OHL) for seventh. His next 20-goal and 30-goal seasons would each tie him for fourth all-time.
- Several graduates could climb their clubs’ seasons-played lists. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Red Deer Rebels / WHL) and Casey Cizikas could set the Edmonton and Islanders records, while Sean Couturier could tie Philadelphia’s mark of 15. Drew Doughty (Guelph Storm / OHL) could move into second in Los Angeles, while Nathan MacKinnon and Dmitry Kulikov (Drummondville Voltigeurs / QMJHL) could tie for third in Colorado and Florida, respectively.
- After a career-best 101-point season, Nick Suzuki (Owen Sound Attack & Guelph Storm / OHL) could become the third Montréal player with consecutive 100-point campaigns. Travis Konecny (Ottawa 67’s, Sarnia Sting / OHL) could match Philadelphia’s record by leading the team in scoring for a sixth straight season.
- Paul Maurice (Detroit Jr. Red Wings, Windsor Spitfires / OHL) needs 44 wins, and Lindy Ruff (Lethbridge Broncos / WHL) needs 50 to join Joel Quenneville (Windsor Spitfires / OHL) in the NHL’s two-member 1,000-win club. Maurice enters his 29th season, one shy of the NHL record. Ruff begins his 18th in Buffalo — third-most with one franchise — and sits 62 games from 2,000. Quenneville needs 50 games to reach 1,900 and can tie for the third-most seasons coached.
